The truck is a 04 F250 V10 with automatic, 4x4, 3.73 ltd slip.
I am wondering if I have a problem developing with the limited slip units, the automatic tranny, or if its just normal limited slip operation.
The symptoms are:
1) A very slight shudder when accelerating hard from a stop or slow speed.
2) There has been a groaning noise when spinning the right rear during hard acceleration on a sharp right hand turn from a stop in the wet (i.e. pullout from a side street).
3) Most concerning was while fooling around on hard packed snow. In 4wd Hi, I floored it and spun all 4 from a dead stop. I though I could smell the “clutch”.
Fluid looks good, doesn’t smell burnt, and the level is good.
Sounds to me i would start with the difff its pretty cheap to pull the cover drain fluid refill and put some friction modifier in it.As for the trans how old is the fluid does it look nice and red not dark?
Hey sportscar, We had a used truck down here with similar complaints, service the diff, it is very important that you use FORD friction modifier, and the FORD synthetic fluid. I know its kind of pricey but sounds like it will solve your problem.
Good Luck, R.
BTW, we serviced the diff w/ aftmkt modifier and regular gl-5, and thats what started the condition.
a12play12 what about using say the mobil 1 synthetic diff lube and the ford modifier?Just thought i would ask this because i work at parts store and it seems everyone is putting the mobil1 in there diffs. And if this is a problem then i will start dirrecting the customers away from it.
My '00 that I just got does the same thing, but only in slow speed turns. Droped in a tube of LS additve, and I hope that solves it...hasn't at the moment.
Any synthetic oil that meets Ford specs will work A-ok.
The key is making sure you have enough LS additive in the differential.
Once they (or you) put in the additive, take the truck out to a gravel parking lot and perform several figure 8's, this will help the get the additive into the LS clutches.
