My sister had the same problems you described. This is the only thing that fixed her computer problem. Go to www.microsoft.com Click on popular downloads. Download Microsoft windows Anti-spyware Beta. ITS FREE!
Hi Guys,
The virus you have is a worm, that reloads itself every time you restart the PC. Start the computer and Look in your processes (cntrl+alt+del then click Processes). Try and write down all the processes, then go to an antivirus site such as Nortons (symantec.com) and start a search one at a time from your list of processes. Norton's will give you a description of each one, and when you have a winner it will tell you what you have to do to fix it. Normally you have to Download the fix file (such as klez*****) Then You have to turn off the system restore, an run the fix tool. Norton's will also let you load any fix tool onto a cd if you have to use another computer to download it. It can be a long and tedious process... (and It's what I do for a living- Lord help me for choosing this career.) This is about the only way to really nip it in the bud, short of a reload (or system restore) and sometimes if you do not format the drive when reloading... it comes back to haunt you. Windows XP service pak 2 has a good pop up blocker-- and I recomend AVG for virus protect (it's very good and free). I like Norton's fix tools and virus removal tools. Just my $.02... any questions just ask, I'll check this more often over the next couple days.
Windows AND Office updates need to be done regularly. And Anti virus is a must and must be updated.
Flip is right (of course). After I thought about it, it is most likely a worm. Follow his instructions and you'll be ok I bet. BTW, I use AVG also and it, in my opinion is better than Norton or MacAfee and as stated, it is FREE!!!!. You can download AVG @ www.grisoft.com. I have had a lot of software conflict issues with Norton so I scrapped it when my trial ran out.
These worms can be nasty and very difficult to clean up but if you are persistent you will get them out. I am not a comp expert like flip4ford is but I have messed with them a little and had to clean up some peoples computers that were inundadted with viruses, adware, and spyware.
I still suggest pcpitstop.com and make sure your adaware is the newer version.
OK guys, installed Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, AVG, Yahoo anti-spy and pop-up blocker, and so far things are running smooth. I got back onto the internet and was surfing iATN and AVG popped up a couple times saying it found a trojan, does that mean that I got it from iATN???? Arrrggghhh, But everything seems to be running OK. Just a thought though, when I ran the scan it didn't say anything about a worm, just 21 Trojans, I hope I got it fixed.
WOW 21 Trojan's it's no wonder the thing was acting up. AVG is doing a constant scan so it may be that it found one or two while you were on that site but doesn't mean it came from there. If you surf it sommore and they continue to pop up when on the site then I would say it is coming from that site.
On second thought if you had 21 Trojan's I would think that is being pretty safe, maybe even to the extreme!!
Duane, it should tell you where the virus is residing...ie, a filename behind the directory it is in. Make sure you have emptied your recycle bin. If it keeps happening you might have to boot your comp to a dos prompt and run AVG from the c:/
Just curious, how many malitious programs did adaware and spy bot find?
WOW!!! I am glad you have it going now. I've seen a computer that had over 200 malicious things on it.... I reformatted it and started over.
Finding the items is the best part... because now you know their names. Did AVG say that there was any that where NOT fixed????? If so you will need to write them down and do a search on them to find any fixes out there for them. (Norton's is a good place to search) Remeber windows and Microsoft office have updates that need to be loaded too (occasionally)
