OT: Is your windows computer being a POS ??

I want you to see this alternative: Ubuntu.

These are a few desktop pics, so you can see exactly what it CAN look like, it is highly modifiable.

Ubuntu linux is free to download. It is about 700mb.
Once you burn the CD, you can run it off the CD without even installing it, to try it out!!!!

No viruses, No spyware, No Microsoft!
Ubuntu runs quick and snappy on even 512MB ram.

I run it on my 4gb 2.2ghz dual core laptop and the graphics are amazing.

I run Ubuntu on every computer I own, except 1 that is used for games, which ubuntu is touch and go with running windows software.

It comes with firefox, and an alternative for almost every windows program, like msn, etc.

You can install "virtualbox", which is basically a computer emulator, you can actually install windows "inside" ubuntu.
I've had 8 instances of winxp running all in windows on my ubuntu desktop.

Going on the internet, your windows PC gets full of spyware and viruses and crap, especially if you go to the "wrong" sites. Ubuntu, you can go to any site you want, and not blink.

Ubuntu manages system resources great, I have full graphics enabled desktop, and every feature enabled, I think i'm currently using 570mb ram with no ram disk.

With ubuntu, I never try to do something, and then realise the computer is doing "something" with the disk, but I dont know what, and I need to use it....like windows.

When I double click on firefox, I'm on the internet in seconds, not waiting for a bloated windows system to pull its head from its rear.

Ubuntu is not for every single person, but I STRONGLY suggest you try it, even just on the CD without installing it. I will never buy a windows PC again, especially after vista, what a joke.

I've had better luck running windows software in ubuntu than in vista. I've tried windows 7, and it seems just as lame.

I've set up ubuntu on about 50 PC's so far, and only ever needed to install special drivers 3 times. Chances are, you should be able to run it, and it should detect all your stuff.

Ubuntuforums.org is an excellent place to learn, and as well I'll be responding here if anyone is interested or has a question.

If you're happy with windows, disregard this post, if you are like the average irate windows user, remember to give Ubuntu a try.

Download it from www.ubuntu.com

I understand that the new version of Windows is pretty damned good, even for Micro$oft. Haven't even looked at it yet. Still running a single core & XPpro here...

Thats because everyone (including me) downloaded a version known as a "release candidate", which is far from a finished product.

Right now, almost every computer outfit would have recieved a 50% off offer to order in advance, to get windows 7 on the shelves ASAP.

Guess what, windows 7 professional retail should be about 250$ !
(based on their 125$ oem offer)

I find it to be basically vista, but fixed enough to shut a few irate users up)

I have XP as well, its much nicer than vista.

My main reason for falling in love with ubuntu, and selling systems with it, is that I was just sick and tired of waiting on windows, and running spyware and virus scans every effing day to keep it kinda running OK.

I may give this a whirl. I am sick of Vista. XP was better for me but neither one really rocked.

not that i'm going to get into a bickering match, but the penguin is not for everyone. in fact, most basic users will never embrace linux.

macs are the way for people who are FEARLESS on the internet.

Ubuntu is not the most versatile flavor of linux. Mandrake is far superior.

Windows 7 is a completely different animal. It is NOT a repackaged vista. Vista, for the most part, has been pretty good with the release of SP1. Most people just get in their mind that is sucks because it is MS. When asked what is so sucky, it is difficult to get an informed answered. WINDOWS MOJAVE proved a lot.

Trust me when I say, no matter what OS you have, you will encounter problems when the user is someone who cannot resist when prompted "Click Here For Boobies!!!"

No, you can access all the boobies you want. Linux is completely immune from windows viruses. Pictures, videos, you can go to any bad sites you want. I have yet to see one ubuntu install get damaged from any website.

No, the penguin is not for everybody, but the newer versions of ubuntu are absolutely amazing. Ubuntu is by far the fastest growing version of linux, and for good reasons.

Note: 1st thing to do after installing, go and enable/download the codec support pack for mp3, divx, etc.

An interesting review, for those who are so excited about windows 7, ....

Even though the review is meant to compare ubuntu to windows, look at the windows vista scores, and compare to the windows 7 scores, pathetic.

And I like how guys on the comments are saying "Not fair, windows gets faster after xx restarts" BS, I have windows 7, and the more stuff gets installed, and the more you use it it gets bloated as heck, just like vista, and xp (but vista is worse)

In conclusion, I use ubuntu for all my work computers, and the only one i have with windows, its xp, not used on internet, only for games.

Cool, Parkland, thanks for the review! I will look into it, and other alternative. It is hard to imagine that I will buy another new PC with Windows on it.

Right now I am running a great alternative on most of my machines: Windows 2000. I love it. But the one I am typing on right now is the only one I am running XP on, and I have to keep on top of it to keep it healthy.

This is true, but again, you are comparing an apple to an orange. Of course linux wont get infected with something coded for windows, but the exact opposite of that is true as well. I have managed to crash linux various times with some not so simple web surfing.

I like linux, but have more love for macs. (OSX runs on a darwin core). open source is great to an extent, but there are more stability issues because of it. I recommend everyone give it a try- especially if you can code.

A lot of the problems with MS PCs comes from the users who THINK they are computer geniuses just because they can surf the web and click on m*space really fast. Social networking sites are a malware cesspool as are all p2p applications (which A LOT of people use). The average user just does not know how to properly secure themselves. And since MS is the mainstream, it is the most targeted.

You can create an Ubuntu boot CD and boot it up and play around with it. I use it quite a bit and it works great. It might boot a little slower from a CD, but it's pretty functional once booted up. Runs pretty good on a PS3 too.
