Stopping popups, internet explorer errors on windows XP

well im extremely frustrated. since getting dsl and xp, i get so many popups its just ridiculous. my computer tries to lock up and i get constant "internet explorer needs to close" windows. ive downloaded every windows update they have for xp and it hasnt helped one bit. i eventually stopped using internet explorer alltogether and deleted it. im using mozilla but im still getting ridiculous amounts of popups. someone please tell me how to get rid of these damn things. by the way, the popups are internet explorer popups, and i used windows configuration to delete it. im stumped!

I use Mozilla and get zero popups with XP. I still use IE for a few functions where only IE will work. IE is still installed on my machine but Mozilla is set as the default browser. If you are getting IE popups while using Mozilla it is probably because Mozilla is not set as your default browser.

Go to: edit>preferences>navigator, to set Mozilla as your default browser.

MS will not allow IE to be uninstalled, part of their courtroom antics.

I'm using Windows XP with internet explorer. I have the Google toobar 2.0 which has a free pop up blocker. So far it has blocked 1073 pop up ads.

But then Google gets to track every website you visit and sells the information to advertisers

Your "Free" popup blocker may not be such a good deal.

I've been using the Spybot program that jbalestri recommended. It seems to get rid of all the spy software, and my Google pop up stopper still works.

I only get one or two of them a day on my XP. I run Ad-aware and Spybot. And come to think of it, the only page that I get them on is cnn.com .

I use NT here at work and ME (I know it sucks) at home and I only get maybe 1 or 2 a day with T1 connection here at work and Wireless at home. Where are you guys getting all these popups? I get one for orbitz when I change pages at espn.com but if I leave it there that's the only one I get. If I close it I get a new one every time I change to a new page. Occasionally I get one for abc news there as well but that's uncommon.

I've seen the ads for the new AOL with the "popup blocker" and never understood what the big deal was. I guess some folks get a lot more than me.

Go to the web and search for a program called Tweak XP. It is a program which you can tell IE which addresses to block. My popup have virtually stopped.

I thought Google Toolbar has the option to not install the tracking thing...

That's your problem. It has nothing to do with IE. Since you now have a static IP address you can be reached by popuppers by a "FEATURE" of XP that is enabled by default. To end your problem right click the My Computer icon and click manage in the menu that comes up. This will bring up the computer management window. Click on Services and Applications. Click on Services. In the list that comes up in the right hand window, locate and double click on Messenger. In the General tab locate and chage Startup type to Disabled. That should end your problem.

This is NOT the same thing as MSN Instant Messenger. This is the "FEATURE" that allows users on a network to send each other messages over the network. With a static IP address you are open to being "Messaged' by this service as soon as someone figures out your address.
