Ok this redneck just don't know enough about my laptop!!! I was checking out a playstation game for my boy and printed off some info from a site . Next thing I know my poor little laptop was bombarded with pop-ups and all kinds of new icons on the desktop So I ran spybot and ad aware, restarted and run them both again followed by disk cleanup and de-frag. Now if I try and open an aplication like recylce bin, internet explorer etc it takes like 2-4 minutes for the window to appear, according to the task manager the cpu is running at 2-5% I can run my scan tool or desktop dyno with no delays. Also when I plug in my wireless card within 1 minute I have desktop icons poping up, within 15 min. I had 40 internet explorer windows open with pop-up ads. I tried to download a pop-up blocker from Yahoo, but could not get it done with all the pop-ups getting in the way. Any ideas??? cuz this redneck is about to go get a bigger hammer!!!!!!!!
I've ran into some things that Ad-aware will find but can't remove. VX comes to mind....had to go hand-to-hand with the registry and manually delete the files. Did you try scanning in safe mode yet?
you've got something on there for sure. Like Mike said try running scan in safe mode. Sometimes it gets locked in and can't be removed while running. WHat OS are you running. If it is 2000 or XP try going in and shutting down the messanger service, this can stop a lot of pop ups. Might also try to download Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spyware Gaurd. I use them and have stopped all pop ups.
I tried to download a pop-up blocker but just can't get it done with all the other download requests for all the other crap, I talked to dell and they say they can "reset the puter to the same way it was "out of the box" I might end up going that route.
Reboot, start tapping F8 before Windows starts loading. It'll bring up the menu, choose safe mode. Make sure you update Ad-aware before doing this as you will lose networking.
I've gotten a few reminders of Microsoft's latest and greatest...the joys of NTFS on home computers. They have absolutely no business putting NTFS on home systems....Windows gets trashed, won't boot, and none of the DOS scanners recognize the hard drive. Just finished wiping another Compaq (cough, choke, gag) and reloading.

They're talking about the system restore CD. It'll supposedly reload it to factory....my HP's worked. Dells should work. Have not yet met a Compaq that worked right. They boot and then can't find the restore files.

I can't update ad-aware, or do anything on the internet for that matter cuz of all the pop-ups, I'm tellin ya, I can't keep up with closing all of them.
That will work by completely reloading the system but remember you will lose any information you have saved. I you can save all you needed stuff and put on a disk then reload and start over.
I keep all our truck records on CD's so that's not a big deal. The only other thing I NEED is my scan tool and all the enhanced software for it. I think I'm gonna go for it, but I don't have any of the original disks.
NTFS is (NT?) File System....the secure file system from Windows NT. Offers more security on a business computer. On a home computer it is just a pain in the butt because good ole DOS doesn't recognize it.
Reboot in safe mode, go to Run-->msconfig. Uncheck EVERYTHING. Don't reboot--go ahead and run Adaware then, it might still find some of the stuff. Then reboot, see if things have calmed down enough to update and run in normal mode. If all else fails, bring it by the house tomorrow evening.
Since you are running XP just do a system restore.
Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
System Restore
What this will do is bring up a calendar with "clickable" dates. what you want to do is choose a date BEFORE all of this happened. Preferably a day ahead. What it will do is restore your system exactly like it was that day at that time. It will erase anything that has been loaded since then and bring back anything that you deleted since then.
This will get rid of 99% of any problem that an anti-virus or spam software (ad-aware) cant find or get rid of. I have only had it not work once and I had to reformat. Wife got some bad spy ware on it that time.
Any questions just ask.
This process will take awhile to do so be patient. If it says can't complete just pick another date.
What version of IE are you using. 6.XXX has a built in popup blocker that works pretty well. I like Netscape 7.2 myself but both have a built in popup blocker.
Installing or enabling a popup blocker will not solve all of your problems though. It might give you a chance to download a program to take care of it though. You have issues inside of your computer so you need to find out what the deal is. Go to www.pcpitstop.com and run the full test on your comp. You will have to sign up but it isn't a big deal and they don't send any email if you mark for them not to. This will tell you where your problems are and tell you how to correct them.
You also might want to go to download.com and download "spyware doctor". I ran adaware and then ran spyware doctor and found over 50 malitious items. Seems to work good for me.
With Adaware, make sure you have Adaware SE personal. This is the new version. If you haven't downloaded SE then when you try to update it will tell you that no update is available.
once you have run this stuff, reboot your computer and run it again. plan on spending a couple of hours.
hope you get it figured out soon. It can be a real pain in the butt.
