I have a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis. Occasionally, after the transmission shifts into overdrive, it will bump three or four times. It started this two months ago and stopped for about six weeks and I felt it again today. I have seen a solenoid of some type mentioned with regard to these transmissions. Does anyone know if this sounds like a solenoid is bad or perhaps a bad electrical connection?
I'm not sure about yours since it has the electronic overdrive tranny, but on the older Vics/Marquis, when they used the AOD unit w/o electronics (80-92 1/2 model years) the tranny would "hunt" to find itself. Are you in overdrive in low speeds? My 91 Crown Vic will "hunt for a gear" around 35 mph. The tranny has a shift point from drive & overdrive and vice verasa around 35 mph. It is very common with the older ones, I was really hoping they had remedied that once they started using a computer to control the tranny. To give you an idea about this problem, my 91, 89, 87, and 84 crown vics do this and it is annoying, especially when you have smart mouth Generic Motors people riding with you telling you their Caprices didn't do this. I just respond so thats why they quit making them.
Mine doesn't appear to be searching for a gear. It goes into overdrive at about 45 mph and occasionally bumps as if it has a short in the electrical system either in the transmission or the engine. It just does this occasionally and will be difficult to diagnose. I thought that if it has a solenoid, I would just replace it (assuming that it is outside the transmission) if it is not too expensive.
