Flywheel worn?

It seems that I have a flat spot on my flywheel. Or at least, that's what I suspect. I occasionally used to have trouble cranking the motor. It would turn over once and then I'd hear a whirring, what I thought was the starter just spinning free. It wasn't an issue, because it was only an occasional problem. After lending my truck to a friend to move a mattress, I have to crank once, wait for the starter to stop spinning, crank again, if it doesn't start, wait for starter, etc., etc., etc. It took 20 minutes to start the poor thing one wet Saturday morning for a dump run.

My question is, does the '86 300 have an integrated ring gear on the flywheel?

Could this be another problem? Maybe starter solenoid?

Not looking forward to dropping transmission to get at the FW.

This sounds like a bad bendix in the start. They kick out to soon when they get worn. It is replaceable you can buy the part for about $15.00 and either have it installed or do it yourself.
If by sonme chance the fly wheel has a bad spot on it you can replace just the starter ring gear if this truck has a standard trans in it if it is automatic you have to replace the flywheel. But you do have to pull the trans.

How tough is the bendix to get at? Just pull the starter, replace the Bendix, and put the starter back, right?

Flywheel worn?

Alright, went to Autozone, asked the counter guy for a Bendix, and he wanted to sell me a solenoid. What I'm loking for isn't the solenoid, but the drive gear, right?

beetertruck:
Why not just buy a new starter....or take yours out and have the guys at autozone bench test it. The test is free.

Flywheel worn?

Before I bought anything, I was going to pull the starter and tranny access cover and do a visual inspection of the flywheel. I don't want to just 'buy a new starter', because if I can fix this with a $15 part, I'm not spending $125 on a new starter. (that's the cheapest rebuild price I could find).

On the subject of AutoZone's starter tester, will that verify the Bendix Drive? I did a little reading, and there's an electrical part and a mechanical part to those suckers. Their tester would probably work the solenoid, and thrust the Bendix forward, but if the mechanical part is what's failing, would their machine be able to verify that?

When my father passed away, he left behind a collection of old starters from his days as a mechanic. We threw them away a couple of years ago, thinking we'd never have a use for starters that we had no idea what engine they went on. I'm kinda wishing I had one right now to monkey with, take apart asn build a background on starters with. (Reading just isn't the same)

I have seen these in the "HELP" section of Trak Auto - but most auto parts stores have the same section. I bought a starter rebuilt kit for mine: brushes, bearing, etc, and ... a new bendix. Might try this route.

Flywheel worn?

There's an idea. Read your message and checked out partsamerica.com, Victory Lap Part# FDS-02 starter repair kit. $12.99. If it's the drive, this should do it. If its the flywheel...... well, lets just hope it's the starter. I'll find out in a couple of weekends. I was able toconvince my wife to let me have an entire Saturday to devote to my poor beleaguered truck.

Thanks for all of the input guys.
