i have a 95 Bronco with a 5.8 engine & electronic O.D. trans(I'm not sure which one it is but it's the push button in the shifter column). My speedometer works fine aat slow speeds up to about 45 mph but when I go higher it starts to swing & jump around. There's no way to use the cruise & I'm never sure what my speed is. Any suggestions?
First stop would be the top of the rear differential housing. You will find the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) there held in by a single bolt. After making certain that the connection to it is reasonably sound, remove it from the diff. housing and give it a good cleaning. Reinstall and see what you get. If the problem persists, try changing the differential oil. (This sometimes washes away any crud that may be built up on the trigger ring in the diff). Worst case scenario, you will need to replace the VSS.
When you drain the gear oil, be sure to inspect the differential itself. I had the same problem about a year and a half ago. It turned out that the differential carrier had cracked on one side and chewed up the spider gears. I wish you better luck than that!
I also had a 95 EB Bronco 5.8 automatic that did the same thing. The dealer ended up replacing the speedometer. Luckily it was covered under the extended warranty. I can't remember what the mileage was when that happened. I want to say between 50000 and 60000
