i have a 1986 f-150. i think that it came with a 351, but it now has a 460. my qustion is about my axles and gearing. how do i find them out? what numbers do i read and where are they? if some will tell me where to find them i can post them. please help, i want to lift my truck and futz with the gearing but i would like to know what i have before i go and change it all. any help would be appreciated.
If your gears are still stock, there's a tag on the diff. that should tell the ratio. Or the label on the driver's door jamb will have an axle code, post it and somebody can tell you what ratio you have.

and then there was this set of numbers over on the right side of the tag about half way down. Here is what it was:
F0082
T0187
I peeked under the ##### end and the back of the rear differential is smooth. that is a 9 inch right? is that what that means? It has warn hubs up front and i do not know how to identify the TTB setup at all.
thank you so much. where did you find the decoders for the numbers. i am a new member of the ford family, converted from chevrolet. i can read chevys inside and out but ford is taking some getting used to. thanks again for your help it is greatly appreciated. anyone else out there know the rest of the number i need to find or can they decode these ones further? thanks all and have a merry christmas.
A 9 inch rear axle is not original to an 86 is it? Isn't it supposed to be an 8.8 by that time? Of course if the engine has been changed, the rear could have been too.
the 9 inch rear end came from the factory, it is on my spec sheet inside the door jam. i thought that the 8.8 came later and that this was the last body style where you could get a facotry 9 inch. but as i said i am new at this so i am not too sure what to think. i like the idea of having a 9 inch in the rear though, they are supposed to be the best!
Yep, a 9" was still available in 86, but limited to certain configurations. Most had the 8.8.
Kyle, I got the axle info from my owner's manual, and I found the VIN info in an LMC catalog.
thanks again for the info! it is going to helpful down the road. anyone that can tell me the tranny and transfer case and all of the other goodies i would love to hear from you. what trannies could it possibly be? a c-6? did the c-4 match up to the 460? i am told by my friend nate that it does not, but i am not too sure. again any help i can get helps me a lot. thanks brown 4x4! this is a great web page.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Dec-01 AT 10:37 AM (EST)]Your trans. (auto right?) is probably a C-6. I don't think a C-4 would match to a 460. Transfer case would be an NP208.
