My daughter broke her arm when she was around three or four horsing around with her friends. She is now seventeen. We took her to the local hospital and the doctor on duty in the emergency room was an idiot. He set her arm so badly that had we left it that way she would have had a slight angle to her arm instead of straight. My wife took her to the Orthopedic doctor two days later that she had gone to before and he reset her arm perfectly. if we had not had her arm reset the right way she would probably have felt self conscious about it in her teen years.
I have three kids.............all older now ( 23 - 21 - 17 ) had a similar situation at work. Foreman said no, general foreman said go. I told the foreman to hug my nuts and I left. Filed a grievence on him over it, he got his *** chewed.
There is a misconception that FMLA covers any absence. In truth, this act only covers businesses with more than 50 employees and has defined qualifying events, which are usually non-emergency situations such as pregnancy, disability or chronic illness.
Thats why I like being self-employeed. Gotta go, GO! Being the Dad of 2 girls, I know about the seeing them in pain thing. As far as the broken arm goes, In the beginnig it hurt, then the cast is cool, then it becomes a pain in the A$$, then it comes off and it feels great, then she wears the fact that she has had a broken arm like a badge of Honor and tells everybody about it! I bet she has you bending over backwards! God were suckers!
Al
If it were me I would have only TOLD one person and that would have been the end. If they complain, i would lock up my tools and load em on the truck, tool boxes have wheels for a reason. But luckly the owner is very religious so hes extremly family oreiented and would throw me out if I didnt leave on my own.

Yes and is a stupid law as well - IMO Good places of employment will allow time off - don't need more laws, just more good employers...........
i told little boss that was leaving for my break and would a little late back...explained my issue and he said no...picked up the phone in front of him and called our DM..5 minutes later i was with her...she stayed overnight and came home this morning.. my DM called me this morning from home to see how she was doing... little boss got wrote up and DM said if either me or her Mom need some time(we work together)with her all we have to do is ask and he will send someone in from another store.. he is a good guy...
You know, there are a lot of employers out there that attempt to prey on unknowing employees, and many more that forget that folks have lives, and that for most, family is the priority.
I recently had a small issue with one of my supervisors. I informed him that I would need a few days off within the next few weeks, to help my father recover from a surgery he will be undergoing soon. His response was, "Well, it depends on what days it is. I've got a few people going out on vacation in the next few weeks.. "
I laughed out loud. I then reminded him that my family was a greater priority than my job, as my job could easily be replaced. I also informed him that it wasn't an issue of "If" I could have the time off, but aparently is now an issue of "IF" I have a job to return to.
I cannot believe how over-focused some folks are on work. Do they not have their own families? Lives?
If you go through life thinking that the company you work for is the most important thing in your life, you're going to be seriously dissapointed. They have no loyalty to you, why would they expect any different in return?
Anyway, good luck with your daughter. I can only imagine what it's like, and remember why I don't dare have kids of my own. I couldn't handle the stress.
Sorry to hear about your daughter but as it has been said kids heal quickly and now your daughter looks to you as her "hero" even more!
As for your idiot boss, he needs to go back and re-read the employees manual! Then he needs to take a course in employee-employer relationships. Like couleee said, family comes way before job and if your idiot boss won't let you go, then you got a right to go over his head and your Big boss should have taken his subordinate into the office and explained how good employees are hard to find and that he should have let you go in the first place.
I work for a local fire dept and even as an emergency services provider I am allowed to go home when there is a family emergency. I don't know what was going through your bosses brain at the time but he should have let you go home without a fuss.
