I had a virus on my computer and did a bunch of things i found on here to get rid of it. Computer works fine but when i try to print it asks if i want to install a printer that was already installed. It won't insatll and shows a message that the printer spool is not running. I can't figure out how to get the printer back to operating. How do you get the printer spool running? Thanks
The first thing I would do is uninstall the printer completely and then try reinstalling the drivers. If this doesn't work there are some other possibilities, but I would try this first.
turn off the computer. unplug the printer and restart the computer with the printer unplugged. uninstall the printer drivers using add/remove hardware in control panel (if usind windows). turn off computer and plug printer back in. Restart. Plug and play (windows) will see it and start the install. If using 2k pro or windows xp the drivers should already be on the system. If w98 or other os, you'll need the installation floppy/cd for the printer.
Go into settings and on the property box of the printer enable spooling.
Control panel
printers
ports - enable bi-directional and spooling
scheduling - print spooled documents first
Make sure the printer is shared and that your username has permission to use the printer.

Then reinstall your printer drivers, turn off (not reboot) the machine, then turn back on and follow the above instructions. Your printer does NOT have to be on to install the drivers, though it helps. Make sure your cable is connected and make sure the printer port is turned on in the BIOS. If you have a parallel port scanner connected, disconnect it while installing the drivers.
my bad rebocardo, the printer does not need to be on to install drivers. it only needs to be on to enable bi-directional communication and to allow the cpu to 'see' the printer and enable plug n play.
There are several viruses out there that will stop your printer from working. just make sure your computer is cleaned of viruses and malware. uninstall all printer software, reboot, and reinstall the printer software.
I don't know much about XP but if you have a way to clean the registry, do so before reinstalling.
I still run Win98 and after anything screws up I run RegClean to clean out any keys or entries left behind that can prevent a clean reinstall.
Since you are running XP and had a virus you might still be infected. The first thing would to be turning off the System Restore fuction. Then I would double check and make sure all the restore points are deleted (http://www.theeldergeek.com/system_v...on_folder1.htm).
From there I would boot into Safe Mode (f8 at startup) and run your Anti-Virus scan. Make sure the virus defs are up to date before going into safe mode.
I would also run spybot search and destroy, and a reg-cleaner.
