Why would you replace parts without knowing what's wrong? That seems like a waste of money to me. Find the code so you know what's wrong, THEN fix what's wrong.
Casey,
please chk how many post I have and I've been on here long enough to have seen alot of problems with these trucks!
I also agree with you about not being a part swapper!Do the diagnostic work first.Your right take nothing for granted.Remember though alot of codes can be stored in the pcm and the right one is not allways at the top of the list.
I would never try to lead someone in the wrong direction or have them spend their hard earned money in the wrong place
But this one has the dirty VSS sensor written all over it. If he comes back and answers my question as asked
Sometimes they never comeback and let us know!

…..See you on the boards.
I bought my 2002 F-350 back in June and the damn O/D light came on, I told the dealer and they diagnosed a faulty T/C and replaced it under warranty.
I got it back a few days later and it happened again, I gave them a call, brought it back and they installed new solenoids and all has been kosher.\
I have since added a Mag Hytec tranny pan and tranny temp gauge.
I plan on buying an additional tranny cooler and the Sonnax valve/tricumulator
I just bought a 1996 F350 Powerstroke Dually a few days ago and THE SAME THING has been happening to me too! It is very random though.. 70% of the time, the O/D "off" light will flash on the shifter and it shifts hard...and 30% of the RANDOM time, it is not flashing and it shifts nice and smooth. And either way, flashing or not, the overdrive button still works great.
Its wierd....but where and how do I check the VSS? What is it and where is it at? I have been looking at all of the Ford message boards across the internet, and it seems like this is a HUGE problem with all of the electronic transmissions on Fords! I bet I have read 40 posts of people having the same exact problem today in just a few hours! And alot of these trucks are even low mile trucks! This is rediculous, and I would think that Ford would have fixed this problem by now. Even the new trucks are doing it! WTF?
Sorry to barge in on this conversation but this site won't let me start a new thread yet. Anyway this is what I got. It is an 02 diesel 350 auto dually. I just had the trans rebilt with few upgrades (torc converter, valve body, shift kit, deep trans pan). Today I was towing my trailer(lite) and the overdrive light started blinking. The 1-2 shift was hard. This went on for about 4 miles. After I picked up the dumpster I was after I shut the truck off and restarted. The light was not blinking anymore and shifted fine. My trans temp gauge never read over 150. This happend to me before and it was the reason I had the tranny rebilt. Anyone have any Ideas. Thanks. Jon
O/D light blinking on my 2003 turned out to be the Trans temp sensor. But I agree with some of the other posts here that say "get the code and then you will know what to replace" There are alot of different problems that will cause the O/D light to blink.
Worth checking this - my overdrive light started blinking on and off one day as I was driving. I pulled over and pulled the cover off of the switch (at the end of the lever) and it turned out that the button had just gotten stuck and wasn't releasing totally. I cleaned it and haven't had a problem since. Might be worth a look-see.
Do i need to get the code while the light is flashing or is it stored in the computer. The light is not doing it now. But i would like to take it by the shop.
