your transmission computer is sensing a slip. If it senses a slip between shifts it will set a code and send the tranny into "limp in" mode. this will cause the OD light to flash and change the shift points slightly. Barney
There's a good chance it is a slip code causing the OD light to flash, but it could be any of about 50 other things. When the light flashes a code is stored in the computer's memory. The only way to know what's wrong is to have the codes read.
If you overheat your tranny the od light will blink. Check and smell your fluid to make sure it is not low, burnt looking, burnt smelling. Can you feel it slipping? I guess you don't have gauges, that would tell you if it is getting hot.
Welcome to the forum. The next thing that will be fried is your trans if you are not monitoring the temps..I get nervous of temps over 210*. Another cause for the blinking light is the VSS sensor on top of your rear end.. Mine was bad last year and i replaced it with a Napa p/n 530780 (napa calls it a ABS sensor).. easy to install... $10.49
About a day after my light started blinking my truck had a real hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd. had the code read and sure enough it was slipping. Oil smelt burnt and was real dirty. I was pulling a trailer up in the mtns when the light started blinking.....
Had the oil changed and so far it is running ok....
I'm new to this forum and I had my overdrive light blinking along with the speedo falling off to 0 mph. Transmission was cold and after 2 or 3 min. it stopped blinking and the mph started working again. Haven't had this happen again. Any comments?

If your truck is an 01", you need a trans rebuild. The symptems of the diode going out.
Welcome to FTE.

Take your VSS sensor off the top of the rear end and clean it and make sure the connection is on good. If this does not help, change it out.
Why only the 01? I'm wondering what the difference was between the '01, and the 99, 00, 02, 03, etc?
I don't know all the details about this, but for the 01' model they put a diode in the trans that takes the place of something. They did through mid 01', then changed to something else. Like you see here I don't know JACK CRAP about this, I just know I have that in mine. I have not had any problems with mine, but I think I will later the way people talk.
I'm sure I just screwd your mine up with this stupid stuff I just wrote, but thats what I know.
