I have had that. My temp guage is all over the place while it happens. It usually settles down and for me only happens when it is very cold for the first few minutes I am driving. I just had my transmission fluid serviced and there were no problems found.
The flashing light means there is a problem. Disconnecting the battery will erase the code and turn off the light, but whatever is wrong is still wrong.
The better thing to do is get the code read and find out what's wrong before it trashes your transmission.
Worth checking this - my overdrive light started blinking on and off one day as I was driving. I pulled over and pulled the cover off of the switch (at the end of the lever) and it turned out that the button had just gotten stuck and wasn't releasing totally. I cleaned it and haven't had a problem since. Might be worth a look-see.
Are there any other symptoms? improper shifts ,speedo not working !abs light on ?
Anything like that?
Does overdrive still cancel when you push the button? if it does good!

If so Now replace the vss sensor on top of the rear diff.

Why would you replace parts without knowing what's wrong? That seems like a waste of money to me. Find the code so you know what's wrong, THEN fix what's wrong.
on my Explorer the light started flashing and it started shifting irregularly, Ford towed it to the shop and ended up replacing the tranny under warranty
check the speedometer sensor on the pumpkin....my O/D light was blinking (as well as some other symptoms), and I replaced the sensor and all was good

I had the same thing happen to me, except that the tranny started to shift in a very jerky fashion. I turned the truck off then restarted and the problem went away.....temporarilly. The next day, the same thing happened. I put a code reader on it and it told me I had a pending fault on my Mass Air Flow sensor. I did a little research and found that this is used by the computer to determine shift timing etc...Well I never replaced it and the problem has not happened again. If it does, I know what to check first!
My 94 7.3L TD throws a light about once a year. It almost always has a code for the TSP (throttle position sensor). There are others, but I think they derive from the TSP problem. This has been going on since 96, and even happened after the tranny was rebuilt (beefed up) in 2001. I have replaced the TSP twice over the years, but it could still happen any time. The symptom usually shows up as a missed shift, and the RPM's just wind up, which usually triggers the light and puts the tranny into the hard shift mode. If that is what triggers the light, I disconnect the batteries for about 20 minutes to reset the tranny light. After all, this is a computer we are talking about, and I have to hit reset on my PC a lot more ofter than that.
