Ok, just came back from the DYNO with depressing news. My 98 Expy 4x4 with 96,000 miles is only pushing 175 HP with 271 Torque. I have a 5.4 Liter with a Gen2 cold air intake, throttle body spacer, cat-back duel exhaust and Hypertech Programmer to change the shift points. Im disappointed. The owners manual says it put out 230Hp and 325 TQ stock!!
Whats really going on here? The truck runs great. Can Ya'll think of anything thats wrong with this picture?
What more can I do to bring these numbers up? Please help???
I think the owner's manual numbers are at the crankshaft, possibly even with no accessories on the motor. I assume the numbers you got for your Expy are at the rear wheels. If so, that sounds about right - there are a lot of losses in the tranny, xfer case, rear end, accessories, etc.
Yes the Dyno is at rear wheels. It just sickens me to think that my beast is only pushing 175 HP. But it runs great and is super quick to be 7500 pounds. I think I need to get the computer tuned.

With the 20% average loss through the drivetrain your numbers are actually pretty good considering you have nearly 100k miles on that 7 year old engine. If you were looking for high dyno numbers you bought the wrong truck. This 5.4 is what you need.
I guess your right. Thats is one sweet engine. is it out of a Lightning? Whats the difference between a Lightning 5.4 and an Expy 5.4? Besides the supercharger of course.
The factory ratings are net H.P. & Torque at the flywheel. Net meaning, with all minimum accessories (Alternator, water pump, power steering pump, A/C comp on vehicles that all have A/C, not "turned on", etc.) Just turning those accessories has some parasitic loss. Then, on your truck, the power has to go through A. Automatic Transmission (average 15-18 % loss) B. Transfer Case (figure 2-5% loss in 2 HI) C. Rear Differential (2-5% loss). Each one of these assemblies has mass, and needs to be turned to operate, that takes power, and thats where your "power loss" is. I'd say your truck is at least making every bit of its factory rating. And remember, factory ratings have an error factor, as not every engine built will perform exactly the same. Different vehicles, equipped the same, power output can vary as much as 5% either way, at the wheels. Also chassis dynos differ. Mustang brand dynos seem to read slightly higher than Dynojet dynos. And atmospheric (sp?) conditions and Temperature will effect outputs slightly.

7500 lbs??? I have a 98 Expy 4x4 and thought I read somewhere that it weighs 5500 lbs...
HEHE, well I figure its pointless to print what the flywheel horsepower is, thats not really gonna say much then huh.
According to the sticker on the drivers door, the truck weighs 7100 lbs, I also have a brushgaurd, tail light gaurds, approx. 200 lbs in stereo equipment, and 33x17 mud terrains. I know the mud tires will decrease the wheel horsepower too. I was just hoping for more. Cant really complain much, the truck runs great. Thanks for the imputs guys.

That is a Lightning engine that belongs to a guy named Chris on www.f150online.com he goes by SuperFords on the forums. It looks great but it blew all to hell shortly after he installed it. Not sure exactly what happened but his truck is now back on the road with a different motor. There are a few minor differences between the expy 5.4 and the L 5.4. Most of the internals are different as the L motor has lower compression. The new L (03-04) engines benefit from the new heads with additional spark plug threads and stronger connecting rods. I ran 16lbs of boost on my 03 for about a year without any problems. I ran 12lbs on my 2000 L and ejected a spark plug and broke a connecting rod.
Anyway, here is a little info about Chris' truck.
