The CEL on my 97 F150 4.6L has been going off and on now for a couple of months. It is on and I finally got the codes read by the teacher and students at the power mechanics shop at the school where I teach. The codes are P1152 HO2S21, P1132 HO2S11, and P1116 ECT Sensor Out of Range. We also get a memory code of PO153 HO2S21. Can anyone help me?
P1116: is the engine colant temp. sensor.....overheating, bad thermostat, damaged ect sensor, low engin coolant, damaged harness or pcm could be the cause of those
P1152, P1132,P0153, H02S11 and H02S21 relate to prolly the same problem: h20 sensor dirty, exhaust leak, shorted or and open wire thats grounded on one the sensors, maf sensor , bad 02 sensor, or even and inlet air leak...
My guess is that you have a bad O2 Sensor.....and a thermostate stuck open......does the truck get hot if you turn the heat on or does it just get kinda warm after a while? if it's not that then prolly the ECT sensor
Truck seems to get plenty hot but doesn't overheat (at least not in this cold weather). Don't seem to be losing any coolant. How can I tell if the ECT sensor is bad? If it is bad, could it be causing the engine to run rich and cause the other codes?
The P1116 is could mean that your ECT is open or grounded. This results is a temperature of -40 degrees. Cause is either the ECT or wiring between ECT and computer.
Engine being that cold will not go into closed loop and will run excessively rich, very similar to an automatic choke staying on until the engine warms up. That causes the O2 sensors to read rich (high voltage). This sets the P1132 (Lack of switching, sensor indicates rich, Bank 1) and P1152 (Lack of switching, sensor indicates rich, Bank 2). Finally, the P0132 code is Slow Response, Bank 2. It is slow responding because it is always reading rich.
If my diagnosis is right, your fuel economy would be in the toilet and you would smell rich exhaust at the tailpipe. On the other hand, you couldn't have picked a cheaper sensor to replace. Thank goodness it isn't the much harder to replace CHT's that came out later. Good luck.
If you run an EEC test before the engine is warm enough it will kick a code P1116, this is normal. A stuck open thermostat will cause a P0125 code, not a P1116.
My 96 4.6 engine shows a message that the 02 senser is bad, I have 2 of them, the exhaust stinks and seams like the engine indeed runs cooler sometimes and can't get WARM in car, but sometimes as it was in past it is toasty warm. Should I start with replacing Themostat 1st.? it's a year old and the last one was orig. and the dealer put it in when they replaced the $1046 intake manifold.
$1046 ain't that something, that T-Bird had a 7yr replacement and because it doesn't get driven in winter, it was 8yrs. old at the time, it and my 2000 F 150 will never see that dealer again. The orig. was composit plastic and couldn't take heat&cold
