Hi all! I own a 1994 F150 4x4 that I am fixing up, including swapping the engine. It has a 302 in it factory and I am swapping another 302 in it that I am rebuilding.
I got a 302 out of a 1987 Lincoln Mark VII and after much reading I am still VERY confused on which engine it is, the HO or non-HO. Here are some observations:
Block code is "25 E7TE CA S" and it has the E7 heads, roller lifters BUT it has the pistons without the valve reliefs just has the 2.5" diamater dish in them which I assume means they are the cast non-HO pistons, but why is it an E7 block with E7 heads, roller lifters if its not a HO?
I'm not sure what year they started , but the newer 302s had E7 heads & a roller cam in the cars & trucks . They were non HO . The HO has a differant roller cam & forged pistons up to around 93 when they went to hypereutectic pistons ....Lew
'87 is pretty early in the life of the EFI 5.0 so it's anybodys guess what you'll find in a motor. This may indeed be a HO all you have to do is measure cam lobe lift, if it's around 0.275" on both the intake and exhaust it's a HO.
Ok took pistons out and measured rings, and I confirmed it has the thinner rings found in the cast pistons....so im guessing its the non-HO then. Weird thing too is it came out of a 2DR mark VII which I thought all had HO motors....and it has the 1 belt setup instead of the 2 belt setup on the non-HO...and I read somewhere that some HO motors had cast pistons....the more I read the more confusing it is
Also, did both the non-HO and HO with roller lifters have the HO/351 firing order? And the sprockets are single gear instead of double so that says non-HO too..
Is there an M in your vin number, if so you have the non H.O. motor. If you have an E in the vin which is rare you have the H.O. motor. The non H.O. came with 200hp and 285lbs-ft and the H.O. had 225hp and 300 lbs-ft same as a Mustang 5.0. Hope this helps

Welcome to FTE
The Mark VII LSC came with the 5.0 EFI/HO engine.
The non LSC models did not. They either came with the plain jane 302 or the BMW 6 cylinder diesel.
The engine code is the 8th digit of the VIN.
From the 1980/89 Lincoln Mercury Parts Catalog / General Info Section / Page 35 / VIN Engine Codes: M = 5.0 EFI/HO 1987 Mark VII LSConly.
1988 and later: The VIN's engine code for the 5.0 EFI/HO is E ~ Both Mustang's and LSC's used this same VIN engine code.

And even if you don't have a genuine HO motor, you can still have HO or better output with a cam change and decent exhaust, the forged slugs in the HO don't add any power just some durability for blown and nitros applications.
