96 Bronco

While driving, started to have difficulty steering. I had trouble coming out of a turn. Pulled into a parking lot to check my tires, and when I made a right turn into the lot the hub cover (?) on my front left wheel came off. There was alot of black grease on the cap, couldn't screw it back on, I was afraid to anyway since I knew I'd be able to tighten it only so much. I drove around in the parking lot and it seemed to be steering better. It is a late Saturday night and nothing's open now and probably tomarrow. Can I still drive like this until Monday?

It sounds like either the hub got stuck in a locked position, or maybe you forgot to unlock one side after wheeling. That would explain the hard steering.

It's hard to tell from here if you can drive it or not. You won't know exactly how much damage there is until you take it apart. So I would have to say not to drive it until you can make the repairs. Spend tomorrow taking it apart so you can see what you need to buy.

Thanks for the info, although I won't be the one taking it apart. Guess it's a trip to the mechanic. It was strange though that the steering would become better once the hub cap fell off. I have 258,000+ miles and was told that my 4 wheel drive would not engage anymore.
Anyway...thanks again.

Seems like time to find out why you were told your 4WD wouldn't work anymore. You may have a malfunctioning auto hub. It would seem a good idea in you case to replace with a set of Warn standard hubs if you don't wheel it. Auto hubs don't like a lot of heavy grease, holds contaminate matter and hinders their operation. I have over 240,000 on my truck and the 4wd works every day perfectly. If you must drive the Bronco and can get the cover back on to avoid contamination, AND the Bronco is now handling properly, no noises etc, as best as anyone can tell from here you probably can drive it. It does sound like you had a hub engaged.

Still looking for a 96, how long did it take you?

I am still looking.
Maybe I am being to picky? I want a one owner with maintenance records. I want to buy from individual not dealer! Would rather have a 351, under 100K miles, and a southern truck i.e. road salt. EB would be nice too.
I am finding out the one owner guys that maintain their trucks are the one that won't sell. They still run great. Am I being to picky???? Been looking for over a year, serioulsy for 4 months.Thanks.
Ohh I found a one owner with 16K miles, LOTS of upgrades, gorgeous. He wanted 20K for it. $$$$$.

I have been looking for a '96 to replace the one I sold for over a year. No, you're not being picky, particular is the correct word. You know exactly what you want and have defined your search. You will have a high percentage of satisfaction when you do find the Bronco you are looking for. Don't settle, life is way too short.

Broncobirdy, I've just read your post on looking for a Bronco. I have a '96 Bronco, full size, 4X4, burgandy in color. Leather seats (one small hole), tires with less than 3000 miles, power windows, locks, cruise and all that stuff. Right now it has a little over 64,000 miles and I'm putting new manual lockouts on it this weekend. If you are still looking I'll e-mail you some pictures if you are interested. I'm asking $10,000, more if you want it delivered, but I'm not a dealer. I have family down around Fort Bragg and it would give me an excuse to come see them.
