my f-350's stock torque converter is making noises and the dealership says the torque needs to be replaced. i am looking into getting the banks torque converter. i use the truck to tow 10,000 lbs on weekends so i was wondering how well it works for towing heavy loads and if its worth the extra money? does any one have experience with it? what about the trans command you have to add along with the converter? does it shift harder, or will it still stay smooth? does any one recommend any other torque converters that will do a better job towing? thanks in advance for your help.
If your driving a late model ford, most people here will tell you to get a TC from the superduty's 4R100, helluva lot cheaper and better than the E4OD.
The way I understand the trans command module is that it is user defined, for example with it disabled, the truck would shift like normal, no change in behavior. With it engaged it changes some of the shift points and locks the TC much quicker. If you are regularly towing, I'd recommend getting some type of tranny controller. I learned a lot about TCs from the banks website, I have not had any first hand experience with them as of yet.
For the TC check out suncoast TC as well. There are numerous ones out there. Banks and Suncoast seem to stand out the most though.
I have the Trans-Command and the Banks convertor in my Excursion. The trans-command is frame mounted and not user adjustable. It is self regulated and moniters trans loads and tq input and adjusts shift firmness and line pressures to match. If I ease on the go juice it shifts very smoothly, if I go half throttle it shifts like a medium firm shift kit and if I slam the go peddle it slams the gears quickly. I have yet to tow with it, my truck that I hual to pulls is apart in the garage, but this summer the Excursion will be pulling a 12-14K trailer and 6 people will riding in its belly. I hope the Banks stuff is good, I got it all :]
I'm into a torque converter up to my elbows on my F250. (78k with a 14k# campin trailer) I have been told that the Torque Converter on E40D trans are the weakest link. They tend to break before anything else even wears. As far as the Banks Converter, I am told that they don't make it, someone else does and it is stamped with the Banks name. Not that uncommon really, But I do not know if that true, someone else please correct if you know, and if so,who really does make the thing?
I do have a TransCommand unit and it detects the load and shifts accordingly, Heavy haulin and hard throttle is smoother than running empty and hard throttle. Smooth as silk when you need it and harsh as hell and instantaneous when you make it. It senses transmission LOAD, operator FOOT is only a component of what it does. Overall I am very pleased.
You would be better of getting a Sonnax kit and installing a switch so you can lock the converter, as far as converters go I would go with the 4R100's or a Suncoast. Keeping the converter locked will really keep the tranny temps down as will the Sonnax set-up.
i also have the banks transcommand, it is the best $250 you could spend.
feels a little harder shifts on easy throttle,( no more hunting and sliding into gear,)
but when you stomp on it it shifts real hard like a shift kit, it does all the things they say it will do. it senses the load and gives way better shifts. the guage never goes over 150*, not towing though.
i would highly reccomend this, takes only 1/2 hr to install. 2 plugs, switch 3 oem wires at the trans and drill 2 1/4" hole to mount it. works awesome.
mine used to shift sluggish and then when you stoppend on it...it would hesitate to shift as it had a load on it but i did not.,
The one thing to know about the trans-command is that Banks does not suggest using it if you have a programmer that effects the transmission. The Banks Big-Hoss and Six-gun do not effect the tranny, they use the Trans-Command as a stand alone tranny fix. So if your buying another brand of programmer you need to call Banks and see if you should still consider thier product. It was suggested to me by Banks to not stack tranny software mods. I'm all Banks for now, so I'm good, but you need to be aware of this if your considering it.

me too, all banks. but most chips on the older ones do not adjust the trans. at least that is what the manufactures told me when i called around. i checked w/ 3 competitors before i got banks stuff. stinger plus.
A chip or programmer will ajust the tranny settings, so yes if you are running a chip or programmer you do not want the banks on there, a good chip will give you more line pressure then the banks anyways, and if you have a custom burned chip you can have the converter programmed to lock up much sooner anyways. Manual line pressure is better then electric line pressure so again you would be better off with a Sonnax kit then the Banks, cheaper to...
