banks billet torque converter 7.3 diesel f350 upgrade

have a chance to purchase a banks billet torque converter for my 2001 f350 diesel for $700 bucks. think its a good deal. just wondering with 65k miles on truck should i save the $700 and go with a new trans like bts laster down the road?? use my truck to haul 99 f150 several times a month. think i should get converter and install asap. also what is avaerage shop price to install converters?? help. thanks. rob.

I will say this, when I rebuilt mine, the only thing wrong I found was a very slight blemish on one clutch. So all my slippage was from the TC. I don't think I would spend 700 on one though, I'd just opt for factory replacement or check locally for a no named low stall one that is cheap. Ebay has a few but they are usually in the 400. The point is, why put 700 towards something you know will need to be replaced when the stock unit will do the same for cheaper.

You just made a good case why he should upgrade the TC then shot it down. I believe the stock TC is a poor performer.

Tc

The stock TC is at best OK for a STOCK application. And even at that they're falling apart. IMHO unless your under warranty and have no other choice, the stock TC should never be an option. This is one area where you do get what you pay for. DONOT buy a $400 TC off of ebay. PLEASE!! And as far as the Banks unit goes they're good for 1100 lbs tq. I don't know the quality of this unit either. But if there customer service, is any indication of the quality of there TC. Don't do it! Just get a good TC and you will never have-to rebuild your TC/Tranny agian. *Unless your building a sled puller or something crazy like that with alot of power. ATS, BTS, TCI all between $1100-1300. But a $400 dollar TC x 2=$800.. labor-$1,500 x 2= $3,000.This totals $3,800. Now figure in your time x 2=?? Well I think you get the point. I say times 2 because if you go the cheap route on a rebuild TC/Tranny you will have to rebuild your tranny agian. For around $3000 you can get an excellent transmission. I think Brian at BTS might even be alittle less than that. Here in CA it'll run yah about $3,200 or so. We are here to help each other so we don't keep making the same mistakes. Take Care..Country..

He had mentioned going to a BTS unit later down the road is the only reason I suggest putting another stock one in. I can't see putting in a really good TC, without addressing the rest the tranny. When the tran clutches go, the new TC would have to be cut open and cleaned up, at this point you'd be in labor more than it would be worth it and the cost of the nice TC would be out the window. If you are going to have the transmission gone through, then by all means get the better TC, 700 for the banks unit is a good deal as far Banks prices goes.

Yup, I see what yah mean. Well I guess if you don't have the funds available it would be an easy and quick fix. I dealt with Banks in the past, so if I sound alittle negative about or towards them and there products it based mostly on my past experience with them. And yes I agree for a Banks product it's not a bad price either. Sorry, didn't mean any disrespect or to offend anyone. I know some people like there products. Take Care Now.. Country
