4wd not engaging

4wd not engaging
Hi Guys, new to the site, i tried searching for this because i bet it has been answered, but the search feature is not enabled(??) i have a 97 f150 4.6l v8 reg cab flareside lariat 4wd... when i put the switch in 4wd the dash light comes on... and stays on, but the front hubs are not engaging. i had a problem on my explorer like this, but the lights would flash then go off... this time the light stays on for however long the switch is set on 4hi or 4low... it does this on either setting... i have been told to check my fusablelinks.. what are those? im new to trucks besides the explorer i had for 3 months i have had this truck less then a year and no problems until now... i want to get this checked out, but i want some knowledge to be armed with when bringing it to the shop... so if anyone can help, or point me to the correct thread i would appreciate it..
