I've read most, if not all, the posts on rear window problems and didn't find an exact answer for my question.
I'm going to replace the motor for the rear window and have read to be careful about the regulator tension and the possibility of losing fingers. Read somewhere also that the tension keeps the rear window up.
So my question is if I lower the rear gate and raise the window, can I replace the motor without worry of losing any valuable fingers? I'm not replacing the regulator, only the motor.
WARNING: COUNTERBALANCE SPRING IS UNDER TENSION! TO PREVENT INJURY FROM SUDDEN MOVEMENT OF REGULATOR COMPONENTS, CLAMP/LOCK GEAR SECTORS TO ALLOW SAFE MOTOR REMOVAL.
3. Detach and remove electric motor from tailgate.
It's not real specific on wether this is with the regulator removed or not.
I am not sure if this will help, it sounds dangerous. Loosing fingers is not a good thing.
Thanks gman88.
Saw the same thing in the Chilton's book also. It is very vague. I think the main thing is "clamp/lock gear sectors". This will probably stop them from moving, if they will with window up.
I'll post the outcome when I get the replacement motor in in a week or two.
I don't know if this will help since I have a 91 but here goes. I just removed my motor to overhaul it. I just disassembled the tailgate. First I unbolted the 3 window motor bolts. That takes the tension off the regulator. Next, I completely removed the weatherstripping( 4 screws), then I removed the window glass (only 4 nuts). Once I had the window out I removed the regulator. (4 bolts I think). I never had any sever tension on the regulator. You do have to move the regulator around some to get to all the bolts. It is a pretty easy job. I tried to get the motor out without removing the glass and reg but couldn't get the motor to slide under the reg. I did't have enough room. One of my Chiltons or Haynes says you have to remove the regulator. Hope this helps.
