lol how about a 300 m50d and 3.08 with a set of 35x12.50 tires?? my truck pulls good and still takes off decently fast, but I can barelly spin tires in gravel.... I'd go with the 300/6.... I love mine even though I only get near 12 mpg highway.... believe me I have future plans for re-gearing....but I can still take a real steep hill in 5th gear and pull up it at normal speed bellow 800 rpm....
Well, heres the only opinion I dont think youve gotten yet, I like an automatic tranny in my trucks, and I was incredibly impressed with the one inline 6 Ive driven (85 bronco) it was mated to a c-6 and did fine.
Gears can be changed. Trannys are harder to swap, go with the tranny you prefer becasue either engine can be made to be quite a stud
I like the 300 six and the manual tranny combo the best. I'm a huge fan of the 300 (take a look at my sig). However, I would think about swapping a 4spd with granny gear in there. JMHO
The mazda tranny isn't bad behind the inline if it is taken care of, just not geared low enough, plus it would be eaiser to swap to a zf than a older 4 speed, like almost direct bolt up. There are lenty of mods you can do to the six if you really need more power, turbos always look neat on them. I have an 85 with the np tranny and run 35's with stock gearing. It can take off jsut fine it just can't peg the 85 mph speedo any more because of stock gearing.
I have brought the motor over 4k rpm without issues tooo, damn low gears in the np tranny amke it harder to get unstck..i would go with the inline if you want to beat the crap out of it and not worry.
I would do a 300-6, ZF 5speed (good HD trans, low first, OD fifth), 3.55 or 3.73 gears with stock tires, or lower gears with bigger tires. I like the NP435 and T18, but with a Six and low gears with no overdrive, mileage will suffer.
I've driven a few I6s with manuals. they are dogs.
If it has 3.55s, I'd go with the I6. All the ones I've driven have sticks w/ 3.08s [=dog].
Easy way to check- look at the axle code tag on the door. 18 = 3.08, 19 = 3.55
31s + 3.08s + 300 = total dog.
I beg to differ on that one! I am running 3.08s with 31s on my 84 F150 4wd/ 300 six/ 4 speed, if I get on it hard enough I can squawk the tires going into third gear! One time I lined up with a 305 powered Iroc Camaro at a stop light and smoked him out of the hole...of course that was with stock tires. I am planning on swapping my 3.08s out for 4.10s because I am going to a 33 or 35 inch tire. I have no problem keepin the the tires spinnin when the mud gets deep. I love my 300 it has the power right where I use it most. Don't get me wrong I'd like to have a 351 in it, the higher end power would definately be nice for towing. But a 300 will outlast a 351, the 300 is much more durable and stands up to hard abuse much better. Not only that but the 300 has a longer stroke than a 351...longer stroke = more torque!
My first truck had a 300 with 3.08 gears NP 435 and 35" dunlops' it moved, not quick but mostly driveable
new truck (77 supercab) has a 300 with a holley 390, clifford 4bbl intake,EFI manifolds and single exhaust 4.10 gear 35" tires NP 435 kicks the allmighty hiney, faster than the other truck with 5.0 EFI and 4.10's swapped in
I'd go with the 300,the average 300 will out live the 302 easily. swap that 5 speed in it though though, those are bad tranny's. aso put a steeper rearend like 3.55 or 4.10.
plus the 300 is a torque monster. doesnt have a torque curve, its more like a torque line. get the truck with the 300 and hook it up to a C-6 and put some 4.10's on it and it will be a monster!
