Hi all, I've been searching for an F150 for about a month now, and have found quite a few, but not exactly what I'm looking for. I would really like to have a Extended Cab, Short Bed, 4x4 with the 351 motor and 5 speed manual, but was told that this combo never existed. Is this true? Were 351's available with a manual at all, no matter the body setup? A regular cab would work, but the ext cab is preferred. Also, the auto will work, but the manual is preferred. I will only 'settle' for reg cab autos after I've realized the rarity of my 'dream truck'. I'm not going to get a 302, so please do not recommend it to me. It's either 351 or I'll go up to a 3/4 ton. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
If you want a 351 with a stick, you're either going to do it yourself or go to a 3/4 ton. You should be able to find a 351 with an auto in the config you want.
I agree with not getting the 302, too. Don't let anyone push you into one.
So the 351 and 5 speed were never available in the F150? I guess if I feel the absolute need for a manual, I can step up to the F250, though I don't really feel like that big of a truck. How do the autos hold up? The only two automatic trannies I've ever owned had major problems before 75k miles, and were maintained meticulously. I don't tow often, but when I do, it's around 4500 pounds, and would like the larger small block.
Even though you don't normally hear good things about the E4OD... I have an original one in mine at 124K with my 351W. F-150 ext cab long bed. Just something to think about.
Nothing wrong with the E40d transmission. Some of the older controllers shifted them "slowly" which caused mechanical problems as things wore out and heated up. It was not a hardware problem to my knowledge - software in the ECM.
I've got the 351/E4OD in my F150 and the 302/M5OD in my Bronco and personally I don't see the big deal in the 302 vs 351 argument, though I've never considered my 351 to be a particularly strong example of the breed. If you're pulling less than 5000 pounds and not often at that you'd probably be fine with a 302, though either way you'd need the auto as tow ratings for the M5OD are pretty anemic. Of course, you want what you want and like you I wanted a 351 when I was looking for my pickup. When I went looking for the Bronco, though, I decided on the 302 because towing wasn't a consideration and I wanted to avoid another E4OD. The one in my pickup has never shifted well and occasionally acts up and really slams the 1-2 shift, and I'm certain that sooner or later it's going to end up costing me a lot of money. Frankly I'm not impressed with either tranny - maybe an F250 with a 351/ZF is the right answer!
