My emergency brake light does not come on when I put on my ebrake. When I first start up my truck the flight flashes on so its not the bulb. Someone told me something about the cap on the master cylinder. If its not full enough the light wont come on or something. Any ideas what the heck this could be I would appreciate it. Thanks!
I wasn't aware the brake light flashed at startup, I'll have to pay more attention. The amber colored ABS light does but the red brake light?
Usually the red brake light is turned on by the e-brake, pressure differential between the two circuits (usually a leak on one circuit), and brake fluid level. Each has a different actuator. You could pull the connector off of the master cylinder, and either that will cause the light to light or jumpering the wire at the connector should.
The float switch in the reservoir is there to turn the light on when the fluid level is low. Not your problem.
Look at the switch on the ebrake mechanism. Most likely, it is out of adjustment or is defective. It will be easy to find as it is the only electrical device on that assembly. It will have a single wire push on connector, most likely. Once located, you can momentarily ground that wire and verify that the BRAKE light comes on. If so, the switch is the problem. Check its adjustment. If the adjustment is okay, replace the switch.
I don't think your brake fluid level has anything to do with your e-brake light. If it does that is really weird.
You should probably consult your owner's manual. The system is designed to operate as I described. If you don't have one, download one from www.fleet.ford.com under the Maintenance tab.
ALL instrument panels lamps are suppsed to come on during the first 1-2 seconds after the ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN. This interval is called the "bulb proveout" test.
