i have a 94 ford ranger splash 3.0l v6 with a Mazda M50D-R1 5 speed transmission!
I was traveling down I-26 at about 70 mph and i noticed my truck wouldnt get over that in 5th gear going up a slight incline. 2 or 3 miles down the road it made an awful squeeling noise!( to me it sounded like a belt) i pulled over and to make a long story short had my truck towed back the 60 miles i had traveled! I was told it was my clutch so i replaced my clutch disk pressure plate and throw-out bearing ( the throw-out bearing that came out had no bearings left in it) before this the truck wouldnt drive more than 30 mph or so now i can drive as normal but i know everything is not right. reasons why include when i press the clutch in and put it in neutral its normal, when i let off the clutch it makes slight winding or grinding noise ( can barely be heard). Next... When im moving in first second and third i get a loud wirring noise ... fourth is perfect it seems like and fifth is the worst!
A man at a garage told me that it was some kind of bearing in the transmission that he could fix for the price of the part and 150 in labor! Before i do anything i want to know if anyone else has heard of this or had this problem and if so is what this man has told me true?
any thoughts are appreciated
btw hydraulic clutch level has been checked and bled also!
ahh yes, that infamous wirring noise. these trannies are notorious for it. mine does it in 3rd and 5th. you dont hear it in 4th because it is 1:1 (turns at the same speed as the engine). i could never get a definative solution to the noise though. hopefully someone will chime in soon.
there's more to it than just the wirring though!... it was there before but now its much louder and more significant. as i change gears it wirrs loudly as soon as i go into the gear(still on the cltuch) then when i get on it in second third and fourth you can here another noise beyond the wirring that i believe to be metal shavings! it sounds like dripping water ( like a a low pressure shower head or something) fifth gear being the worst when i go more than 1/5 of the way down on the gas in 5th going any speed it is very obvious and loud. its obvious something aint right but i dont know what.
good news! my parents said they'll lend me the money to have it fixed so they dont have to worry about it breaking on me while im going down the road. This means i need to come to the conclusion fast as whether to rebuild or buy a used one for 600-800 dollars! i appricriate you help so far man thanks! lemme know some more folks please thanks!
I think a used one will cost more than 800 bucks. I had a friend who's rangers transmission went out and he spent more than a thousand bucks on a used one. I guess it all depends on who you get it from. I think you might be able to rebuild it cheaper because it sounds like you have a bad bearing.
I have the same issue on my 88 (2.9). 3rd gear makes a whirring noise and 5th makes a LOUD whirring noise. Often (but not always), when I go from 3rd into 4th, there will be a noise for a few seconds which sounds like a liquid being squirted. It also pops out of 1st a lot but I'm not sure if that would be related or not.

if it is popping out of gear then that means it is time for a rebuild.
My daughter has a 97 Ranger that I can hear coming down the street because of the transmision noise. Had it out this fall to replace the clutch and opened the tranny for a look. Could not find anything wrong. It has done this for years and continues to run fine at 150K miles. Popping out of gear is another story. Something is broke. I would recommend a rebuild at a reputable transmission shop. Good Luck.
