<DIR><DIR>Hadn't started my truck in a while so last night I decided to crank it and let it run. Turned it over a few times while trying to wear the accelerator pump out on the Holley. (If you own a Holley you know what I mean) I noticed that the ignition switch was a little stiff to turn so I sprayed liquid wrench in the keyhole to loosen it up. Just a little psst, not allot. Now the switch WILL NOT turn. If I remember right the switch must be turned to stick a paper clip in the hole to remove it.
If you can get it to turn, turn it to accessories position and you push a paperclip in the hole and turn it a little more and pull.Do you have another key to try? If you can;t get it to turn after trying, pull the bezel off and remove the switch. Pull the wiring off and put it on a table or vise. There's a small hole in the back edge and you can see a pin in there. Take a punch and drive that pin down, Then pull the tumbler out, you may have to insert the key to pull it out. It's now junk. You can get new ones thru NAPA and then take it to a locksmith and have him key it to your key.
I don't know the rates in your area, but I hate the inconvienience of a bunch of different keys and remembering what fits what that I'd pay the price. I used to be able to code these locks years ago, but the old eyes aren't what they used to be!
To me it's worth $20.00 or so to get it done.
Barry,
Last night I got it to turn by applying a little more force. Apparently freeing up the tumblers revealed a not very well made key. Thanks for the method for how to remove the switch. I had forgotten how to get it out.
Now back to the locksmith
Remember your tumblers are worn in that lock from age. You can wire brush the cuts on the key to round the edge. They're probably still pointy and sharp. If you have a wire wheel, run the key over it and try it. That's what the locksmith will do.
