I'm currently rebuilding a 390 that has the stock points distributer, and would like to convert to an electronic, were there ever any FE's with electronic or do I have to buy a triger for mine?
You can also use the Ford factory Duraspark ignition from an FE. Dissect the entire wiring harness, from a '73 - 76 with a 360 or 390, and you can install it in your FE.
Be sure to mark what wires are cut and where they go, and it will be easy to re-install.
or do what i did i bought the crane cams xr-i points conversion to electronic from summit for 74.00 with ship and it comes with rev limiter i had the ford duraspark and it is unreliable it would go through modules and pickups like no tomorrow
I have used three Pertronix Ignitor modules, and put over 200,000 miles on them total. If you follow the directions they work great.
The problems appear to be a lack of understanding of what a ballast resistor, or in our case, a resistor wire is and does. Again, follow directions.
But here is a new comment: after all these miles I finally toasted my module. My fault..., the original Ignitor can NOT sit there with the ignition key on while not running. The new Ignitor II can, and also is protected against hooking it up backwards. Seems like a good reason to buy the newer design for an additional $25 bucks.
hi Guys I need to slide in here and ask a question about a points conversion. I would like to go with a new distributor but for $$$ reasons a conversion seems like a better choice. Should I get or rather do I need a new coil? I have a 70 f250 w/ a 390. Petronix vs. crane as far as quality /price?
I had the OEM Transister ignition in my '67 427 cid Mercury and replaced it with a Petronix unit. The OEM unit put out one hell of a spark but suffered from point float at about 7,000 rpm, installed the Petronix unit and my ignition problem was gone.
