428 cobra jet?

I am putting a 428 back in on a hiboy and the flex plate was off when I got the motor and i bought a new one. Is there any particular way to put the new flex plate on?

Since the 428 is externally balanced, the flex plate (and the flywheel) bolt holes (all of them) will only line up one way.

Bear: reading that post, makes me question. I have read that one can have a 428 crank zero balanced and use a 390 etc flywheel/flex plate. How would this be possible if the 428 flex/fly are unique in this way..? Or am I missing something?

Yes, you can have them zero balanced, but you have to drill the counter weights and install heavy metal to do it and the price is not cheap. If he had that done, he would know it because of what it cost him and he would not be worrying about an externally balance flywheel.

Bobby, I would have to go out in the shop to verify this, but I think the 360/390 cranks also have an odd bolt spacing.

I remember horsing around with this when I was tearing down the '65 engine.

Bingo. Your right Mike. FE crank flanges have 1 bolt hole several degrees out so the flywheel/flexplate is indexed in one postion.

Assuming your 428 is still external balanced your flexplate should have a weight welded on it if it's for a external balance FE crank. You'd want to confirm correct balance. As Bear mentioned.

the flex plate has a weight welded to it and i bought it brand new so im assuming it is balanced correctly. the motor was just rebuilt and the guy said he did not balance it internally.
