I have a 1975 ford f 150... with a 390 with a 4bbl. ... electronic ignition with magnetic pickup coil... I'm attempting to put the reluctor on.. it's getting stuck a quarter inch from where it needs to go... do I need to take a pin out then put on reluctor?...

still stumped

been researching this for a few hours..
I must really really suck at finding what i need...lol...

over 70 people viewed this post and only 1 reply...
I wish someone could help me figure this out...
The reluctor is near to less than an 1/8th of an inch to being seated properly.
The pin that holds the reluctor stayed right where it was i think...
reluctor is ALMOST there!!!!
I did a few blasts with a hammer and a socket on the reluctor to get it seated but it seems to be staying stuck where it is....
Why????
I took my time and i know i got it put together right...I THINK...lol...jk...

If your reluctor (never heard it called that) ie: armature is aligned with the pickup stator it's probably fine. The pin only keeps it properly located on the shaft "rotation" wise.

Look at the bottom edge of the armature and see if it is near or below the metal pickup edge of the stator.

Also there is a gap between them. I don't know the measurement right now but it is at least the thickness of a matchbook cover. I'll measure it when the rain stops and get back to you.

You are probably good to go so don't force anything.

edit: I measured .030 between the armature (reluctor) and stator pickup

the reluctor seems to be only in electric ignition.
It is the star shaped 8 pronged piece that spins around the shaft and contacts the magnet to fire each piston.
the face of the teeth are a little over a 16th of an inch above the point where the magnet and tooth contact magnetically and send the signal...
Not sure what to do. i have given it some good blows with the hammer...

Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - sixshootingexp's Album: 1979 f150 magnegnitic pick up - Picture
this is a link to my album i think...
not sure how to post pics...
the old one will not go on either...
my thinking is that i need to take the pin out to get it on.
but...if you notice, in the pics,,,the part of the wires that slides onto dist. where the ground screw attaches seem to be sitting a little hi ..
meaning that the cap will not go on like that unless i push down on it of course but something isnt right here...
thanks again..
if the link doesnt work ...my album has the pics

Stop beating on it and pull it off. Find out what is causing it to not install correctly. They are a snug fit but not a "pressed" fit.

Is this as far as it will go?
