Just purchased 87 crew cab duelly, truck sat for 2yrs, runs great no smoke or blowby fast start but 4 injectors leak. Can I replace O Rings and is there an instruction set on line. How do I tell what engine I have? thanks newbeee
The 87 model year is where they changed over from the 6.9 litre to the 7.3 litre engines and I dont know the mfg date of the change. The injector caps are able to be changed along with the o rings beneath them. I would advise changing ALL and replacing the fuel lines between them. There are kits available that contain the o rings, caps and fuel line. There are many sites on here that explain the procedure.

I was in your exact situation. You can get the o-rings from ford by themselves(which I did). However, after installing all the o-rings, everything was cool for a few days, then they started leaking again. I would HIGHLY recommend buying the complete kit and replacing everything.
87 was the goofey year, they changed body styles, motors and transmissions that year. you could have a 69-4speed-old body style or the 7.3-5speed-new body style or anywhere in between. i have seen 87's with a 6.9 and a 5 speed.
i don,t think they ever put a 7.3 with a 4-speed, but that would just be bad luck... if it's a 6.9 with a 5 speed, then that's a very good truck. there is a way to tell if it's a 6.9 or 7.3, but i don't know exactly. someone in here knows how to tell them apart. it may be that the 6.9's had the glowplug controller WAY in the back, the kind that screws into the block and the 7.3 had a new black box style g.p. controller under the air filter. look for posts about cutting the soupbowl and restrictor plate out of the air filter, k-n air filter, exhaust, turbo kits, and fuel adjustments, gear ratios, and other things to tailor your truck to the way you like it. sounds like a good truck you got there, starts-runs good even in winter. that is a BIG plus, first thing to do, put the right additive in your coolant and use the right oil for your tranny-engine-rear ends. and have them checked-changed. very important. got a question, just ask, or look it up in the "search" and you will probably find everything that you need to know. may sound like a lot to do, but it's not that hard to figure out.
Thanks all for your help. I have a 6.9 you can tell from the vin code, ther is a vin decoder available through google. I cant read the door codes as someone painted over them so I still need to figure out the rear end ratio.
chalk up the front tires, front and back, then lift up one rear tire with a jack, and put it in neutral, get somebody to turn the tire exactly 2 revolutions slowly while you count how many times the driveshaft turns. you will be able to tell the difference between 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10. an easy way is to watch a u-joint, and measure in 1/4 turn incriments.
