65 F100 engines were either black w/gold or blue valve covers(352) or blue for the 6 cyl as I recall....if anyone can enlighten on FE color for things like intake, etc that would be most excellent...block and heads are black though

Camperspecial is right about the block and heads; they were shiny black.
The valve covers, though, were gold. Blue wasn't used until '67 or '68.
The intake manifold was also black.

Well I'm kind of sorry I read this thread.. My father must have switched engine color during rebuild, he always liked blue. My whole engine is Ford blue. Now I'm thinking I may have to change the color.

Maybe when it is time for the next overhaul..I kind of like the Ford blue.

I neglected to clarify that all I know about is the FE V8 used in the '65/'66 F-100 trucks. Ford only used 1 V8 then, the 352.
I do not know about the sixes available, so the colors for them may have been different.

well banjopicker

That doesn't help ease my pain since that is what I have is the 352...

Oh well like I said maybe the next overhaul.

Thanks

Well Jd
Im not sure JD. I just bought this 66 f100 352, it was previosly owned by an old logger in Exeter CA. The guy who owned it after him had the body painted but Im pretty sure the rest was left original. You see this old logger even left the original AM radio. ANyway, the engine has at least 200k miles maybe 300k, and under the gunk you see that the entire block including valve covers was blue. Im not suggesting that in 35 years it was never overhauled and painted. It just doesn't seem like something the previous owner would have done. Check into it, your dad might have been right!

Gentlemen, I bought my '65 F250 in 1977 with 57K. It was a one owner (retired farmer) vehicle in absolutely stock condition. The 352 was and is entirely bronze in color. I repainted it at 200K after a rebuild with the same color as found in the paint spec book at our local auto finishes outlet. It is referred to as Ford Bronze. If anyone is interested, I have the paint code and mfg. in my archives. Steve

So, we have no definitive conclusions here. We have an all bronze '65 352, all black w/ bronze(or gold) valve covers, and all blue.

My '65 F-250 w/ 352 automatic, came to me with 71,000 miles and all black block w/ tan valve covers.

Hog Farmer, I don't doubt what you have, but I've never seen a block painted bronze.

Can someone give a definative answer here?!! Sitting on pins and needles because I'm about ready to assemble my new motor and would like to paint it correctly.

Also, no one mentioned air cleaners?

The air cleaners were painted black as well, with a sticker on the front.
I have never seen a '65/'66 352 truck with a factory paper element; all the ones I have seen are oil bath round ones.
By the way, the engines, intake manifolds and air cleaners were painted a shiny black, not a flat black.

I went with an aluminum (painted) timing cover, sort of offsets the headers a little and doesn't look too out of place. Went with shiney black on everything else and the gold valve covers cleaned up well. I also put a little vasoline on the freeze plugs prior to painting, then you can wipe them clean and show the bright bronze. Problem with the covers clearing the adjustable valve train so I had to buy newer ones, which are getting the same gold as originals. The original motor was all black, top to bottom/front to back... I will hopefully get everything in place and running this weekend (more pics of course)

Is it possible that Ford didn't have any specific way to determine how the engine was painted? Perhaps one plant painted their engines differently? Or Ford couldn't make up it's mind? Just a thought.
