How fast should a starter turn

ive got an 83 ford 100 it runs great when it starts, When i turn the key it will turn over but not very fast, sounds like it has a dead battery, I can jump it off and it will start good, I took the starter off and hooked a pair of jumper cables to it to see it spin, It spins but slow, I was wondering have fast should it turn. Any help would be greatly appriciated

If you think it is spinning too slow then it probably is. It could also be your battery. If the starter is really old then maybe just replace it?

It could be just wore out cause as you said it spins slow on the bench test, you could replace the brushes (thats kinda of a pita), but i think its just generally wore out.

The counterman at AutoZone showed me where the later 300s have a better starter than my 83 came with. It fits fine, spins real strong.

I just went through the same thing with my 82 302. I had just overhauled the engine, and when I went to start it, it would barely turn over and only turn over a few times before my battery died. When I put it on a charger/starter, it would turn over faster, but still not like it should. I replaced the starter tonight, and it turned over perfectly. If your starter is struggling to start it will drain your battery in a hurry and give you the impression that you have a bad battery. I'd check the battery out at autozone first (because it's free), then I'd go with a new starter if the battery checks out good. Good luck.

im certain it aint the battery because i took it off and put the battery to my other truck on it and it does the same thing. Im picking up a new starter this evening so maybee it will fix the problem
