I'm a newcomer to this forum, hope sombedy can help. I recently bought a 81' f-150 4x4. The front drive shaft had a lot of slop/slack at the spline and slip yoke at the transfer case. I took it out and it only has about 2.5 inches of spline. (It looked like it had never been greased.) It looks like it should have about 4 or 5 inches of spline. Is this correct? Can this be repaired or am I looking at a whole new drive shaft. I found a drive shaft on the internet for about $184.00. Are there cheaper ones out there? (302,c-6,np208,9"rear)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Sep-02 AT 10:16 PM (EST)]Go to the parts store(Napa or somebody like that) and they should have a new slip yoke(female part) and a new spline(male part). You then have to take the shaft to a driveline or machine shop that works on driveshafts. They will cut the old spline off and weld the new one on and then balance the shaft. I know this sounds like a crazy way to do it, but they do it all the time and it's no big deal. People don't realize that even though they don't use the 4wd much, that slip yoke slides up and down all the time with the suspension and without grease, will wear out.
You might want to check the passenger side axle, It's set-up the same way, with a slip yoke, and they wear too. Only problem is, there is no way out on that one. If the splines are worn, you have to buy a new axle for the passenger side along with a new yoke.
