4x4 and 4x2 steering column interchange
I am putting a cab from a '76 F-250 4x2 on a '76 highboy chassis. The 2 wheel drive steering column has a flange and a rag joint at the bottom of the steering column. The 4x4 has a splined shaft and a u-joint. I would rather use the 2 wheel column and change out the shaft to the splined shaft as the highboy column looks rough. Can that be done and what is required to make it work? I have not torn them apart yet, but I assume there is a clip or retainer at the top end of the shaft that would release the shaft from the column assembly.

That is correct, it will work, been there and done that, remove steering wheel, signal switch, remove clip on top shaft will fall out the bottom, slide in new one and replace retaining clip and steering wheel. You might also find a very nice centering ( i call it a bearing, it's held on with allen screws, slide it on your shaft and use it) on the 2 wheel drive one. Takes the play out of your shaft.
