Hello all! its been awhile and Happy New year to you all.I need to talk to someone with a ton of 7.3L experience. My truck has been getting harder and harder to start in the mornings.I found bad block heater and fixed it but still starts badly and this morning not at all.Granted it is -35 out but still need to drive lol.The only thing i can think of is that the glow plugs arent working. I checked and replaced the intake heater relay(was bad) and checked the glowplug relay seems fine.I also did a proper load test on batteries and they check out good.im a heavy duty mechanic so im not completely stupid but maybe im missing something short of taking it to ford $$$$ would like to fix it myself if i can.If anyone can help please let me know? Thanks for letting me vent lol.Nothin runs like a FORD!
P/S how hard are the glowplugs to change????
Glow plugs on a NA 7.3 are easy to change.
With the block heater plugged in & 8 new glow plugs, it should start OK. -35 will require you to cycle the glow plugs at least twice.
Plan "B".... If you don't care for using ether, open up the breather, lift it up and pour 1/2 ounce of gasoline right in it's air hole. I'd like to have a buck for every time I had to do that.
Of course the filters are all fresh.

Thanks for the qick replay! Dont the wires for the glowplugs etc go through the valve cover somehow at least this is what i was told? Actually i tried either but it didnt work i didnt want to but thought id give it a go. But your saying to remove my Open air element and pour gas into it ill try but never thought of that ill try again! thanks again
When you didn't specify your truck was a PSD, I assumed it was NA. PSDs are a whole different can of worms.
Little, tiny, one second, baby shots of starting fluid will be OK when administered at the farthest opening of the air intake ductwork. A large shot is the type that will lock an engine up.

np i dont reccomend any starting fluid and was surprised when you said you would lol Im going to take it into work tonorrow and try and figure whats going on Thanks though. If anyone else has any idea feel free to recommend!
Is it running yet? The fuel may be gelled. You might try some power service 911 or other fuel conditioner which reduces the pour point if you don't already have some in the tank.
Other than that, a freind of mine had a similar no-start problem on his 7.3 PSD. It was a bad CAMP sensor (Cam Position Sensor). His would not run at all.
My last truck was a '99 7.3l, and I also had the same problem. Turned out is was a "brain" for the glow plugs. Good news is it was a quick fix (1 hour), bad news is the new computer listed at just over $850.00. Good luck.
i got it running today everything seems ok now. I already had a bad cam sensor so i know what that is like!i run a fuel conditioner regularly it seems to run much better with it tin it. I still dont think my glow plugs are working though.Anyone know where i can find a site with code codes i can read them just dont know what they mean ??? thanks again everyone
