Starting to get cold here and I have been having a real hard time starting the truck in the morning. I have all brand new glowplugs in the truck I replaced some of the connections on the wires that looked like they need to be replaced. The glowplugs are set up on to a button I can hear them turn on when I push the button but they arnt workin so well. With it being push button is there still a relay or is that bypassed?
there's still a relay, but now your the controller.
your issue if likely a failed glow plug (or 2,3,4,5.... )
you can test them with a test light, swap out the dead ones.best to test via resistance, and or replace all at once anyway.
do yourself a favor and use motorcraft glows
How long are you holding the button on for? Should be around 7 or 8 seconds. If you using the correct starting procedural and it still wont start I would say your relay is probably shot. When you do get it going how well does it start after that if you leave it for a hour or so. If you still have the same problem even when its warm then you have air intrusion.
depending on the outside temp, the '87+ system will glow the plugs up to 15 seconds for you.also what it does once the light goes out (stops glowing) they will cylce on/off for a few seconds (afterglow) to help keep the engine running smooth to not only keep it running, but eliminate white smoke too.you can try a bit longer glow time, followed by flipping the switch back on/off a few times once she first starts.
of course, having a good starting system is key (starter, two 850CCA min batteries, clean cables, etc.) if you see any bulging, dark in color positive cable lead where the pass side runs down to the starter and over to the other bat, odd's are she's full of corrosion and is in need of replacement.
these high torque monsters need to turn over really quick.
after going through my truck after purchase,it wasn't until the injectors where replaced that really eliminated extra cranking.after those where in,she was instantly firing just like she always did when warm.i couldn't believe it.
Just to be clear the gp relay is the one on the back if the motor by my turbo right? If that's it it looks different then the one I'm lookin at on autozones website
I had an 88 with a similar set up. New plugs and injectors didn't help. It ended up being a compressin issue, and after a rebuild it was done with the ether addiction. BUT of course they're all diff, and this one had a rough life for about the first 10 yrs. Good luck tho
