Hey guys, I own a '79 Ford 2wd pick up and am considering converting it into a 4x4. I also want to change the cab into a crew cab plus short industrial box instead of the regular cab and long box. Has anyone gone through this process successfully? Would it be a better prospect to just hunt down a crew cab 4x4 and start from there? Any info would help. Thanks, Trevor.
It would be alot of work, but it could be done. Do a search for "4x4 conversion" in this forum, it will tell you more of what is involved. Welcome to FTE
It is far easier to just buy a 4x4. There are many threads on this forum about the conversion or tries... Failure is a common result. Mega $$$ spent is common. The frame is not the same. The easiest "conversion" is to lift the body off and set it on a new 4x4 frame and running gear.
Its one of those things where people usually have more money than brains
These projects only cost a lot of money if you're paying someone else to do all the work. If you have tools and fabrication skills it can be done for next to nothing.
I, too did it, and I have a total of about $800. I used the frame and front end from a parts truck, and had to buy 8 lug outers to make the two axles match. Buying an entire donor is by far the cheapest way to go, but then you are saddled with the junk that is left over.
