My wife and I had a 96 SE with the 3.0 Beautiful car, smooth powerful, damn good highway mpg (35). The tranny went bad at 40,000.

After '96, Ford finally fixed the auto problem? I'ld consider getting another Taurus/Sable if Ford did fix it.

I've become a fan of the Taurus myself. My mom bought an '88 Taurus L for 1400 bucks almost 3 years ago and it's been a great car for her. Has the 3.0, goes like a raped ape. No tranny problems, although I keep my eye on it. Worst thing I've encountered with it was replacing the heater core, a major PITA! I was just given an '89 Sable, also with the 3.0. Figured on using it for a parts car for mom's Bull, but now I think I may fix it up for my niece. Car sat for a couple years, they stopped driving it because of intermittant fuel starvation problems. I got it fired up pretty easily and drove it a few miles, now it's sitting till I have time to work on it. Yes, there are still decent freebies out there! Too bad it wasn't an SHO Taurus...anybody got one sitting around they want me to haul off? (I'm jealous, Rockledge...!) -TD
