My parents are going to buy a new car in the beginning of next year, and they were going to buy a F-150, but the situation has changed some because we got my nephews living with us, so we want something with a 3rd row. So my question is should they buy the Expedition, Explorer or Taurus X? They don't tow anything yet, and the explorer tows as much as there current truck so there not losing towing capacity unless they go with the Taurus X, but they could use there current truck. One thing I really like about the Explorer and Taurus X is that they are avaible with the Sync system. So my question is what Ford Vehicles would you reccommend for a family with three kids, a 3,5 and a 16 year old?
From someone who owns an Escape, Explorer, and an Explorer Sport Trac, I would recommend the Expedition personally. Especially if you have gear you need to carry with you for the kids. The Explorer will work and I think they would be happy, but with that many people in the car, especially if everyone will be using it a lot at the same time, I think the extra room in the Expedition would make the difference.
I'm 18 now and we grew up with a few (4 total) Expeditions. We loved our first '98 so much that we still have it. I'd say, go with the Expedition. Sounds like your only concern is space, while disregarding gas mileage. We never had any major complaints with our Expeditions.
Since we're all old enough to drive now, we have an '07 Explorer Sport Trac, my Tundra, a 4runner, and the '98 Expedition. The Expedition is the ultimate people hauler. Even though our 4runner doesn't have a third row, I can imagine how small that is. I have seen them in Explorers (friend's dad owns a few dealerships) and my best friend's twin sister sat in the back of one on the way to a football game. It's very small and if you plan on taking long car trips, the Expedition is the only way to go for multiple reasons. Space for cargo and people are among the reasons.
My vote - the Expedition. The Explorer is a pretty good choice but not one that is very practical if you're going to make long car trips.
I would go with the Expedition as well. It has heavier duty motor/trans/everything and will probably last longer than the rest. If you aren't going to keep it forever, that doesn't really matter. But it will certainly have the most space, especially if you get the new EL.
Do they want a car or truck?
If car, then no question go with the Taurus X. Just as much or more room than the Explorer and better ride/handeling and general parking/manuverability. Better MPG too.
If overall size is not an issue for driving in town/ parking etc. The Expedition is about same on fuel as Explorer but has more interior room.
