does the engine rotate when you try the key? if it does, then you more than likely aren't getting fire to your plugs, which would mean possibly the distributor, coil, pickup inside the dizzy, etc.
now if it isn't rotating, it could be frozen up, broken timing chain and many other possibilities... but i won't discourage you, give us some more info...we'd be glad to help!

howdy ya'll,
well the problem with my truck is this . The half moon that is attached to the rod on top of the steering column. I will explaine what it was doing so you know. First the key went all the way down with no resistance when trying to start. Second it would not go into gear when started from the rod on top of the column. Third I could not get the key out because it would not go into park. When you have power and no resistance you might want to look at this piece. it is a half moon that has a small square rod sticking out of it that goes in to the square hole in the top of the steering coumn. now it works

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Nov-02 AT 08:26 PM (EST)]Sounds like you have a broken "actuator rod". When it's broken the key won't "actuate" the ignition switch at the base of the column. Also, when it's broken, the piece that breaks off can drop into the slot that keeps the gear selector ever from being moved without the key. It's a fairly common problem and the part is available at most parts houses.
