i have a '97 f-150 and a '99 f-350 that share a similar electrical problem. the alarm indicating the key is in the ignition rings with the door opened and closed. also, the dome lights stay on sometimes for so long after the door is closed i have had to pull the fuse to keep from running the battery down overnight. where is this switch located and can an average home mechanic replace it??

I am presently holding what might be your problem in my hand, It's called a Central Timer Module (GEM) Generic Electronic Module.
This module controls the Chime, Windscheild Wipers and Dome Light(s).
I own a 95 Ranger and my experience with the chime/dome light is that they remain activated when the cab temperature in 70 degrees and above even in shaded areas out of direct sun. During cooler periods no problem. The windshield wiper activation is intermittent.
I'm not sure of the location in the F150, but in the Ranger the module is mounted on the leftside of the dash in the radio compartment in a plastic unit with (1) mounting screw. Remove the radio, Unplug the wiring harness from the module, remove the mounting screw and slide the module upward to diengage from (2) mounting tracks. The release of a tension tab on each end of the plastic case will reveal the module.
The quoted price of the module is $192.11. I 'm trying to ascertain if there has been a recall on this item.
Also, lube the door latches, where the switches are for the dome light, with WD-40.
Sounds like your problem is more likely to be the GEM, but the switches are frequently a problem with the lights.
