I keep seeing people referring to toyota power steering conversion kits.. But I cant find where the kits come from..
1. Is this a bolt on thing, direct replacement for my strongarm box?
2. what about Pump mounting?
3. Hoses?
4. Durablity?

Some ansewers would be nice :d

The kit is very simple. I got mines from Mid-fifty. All you really need is the bracket which is bolt on, the pitman arm and find a place that makes hoses. In mid-fifty's book, they tell you what year box you need to find in the j-yard. It took me awhile but i found a good one for about $200. It was in excellent condition and the only work is making the hole bigger where the pitman arm will attack to the box. Everything else is fairly easy. Took me about half a day if that. I am using a mustang pump that mounts on a 302. Pretty easy. Good luck.

"No Limit" has the kits... complete with Toyota box or without...

Hope that helps,

S.G.

p.s. I don't think that includes any brackets for mounting the pump, so maybe it is not so helpful after all...

I am putting one on my 1960 now. The toyota box comes out of a 79-85 toyota 4x4. I got mine from a salavage yard, it was much cheaper that the kits you can buy. I did buy the mounting bracket from mid-fifty. I made my own pitman arm, using the original and the toyota and some good welding. The mounting bracket is the same for the 57-60 trucks as the 53-56. The pitman arm is different.

The kits do nothing about the pump. I have a 292, so I can't help much on what exactly you need for your engine. I bought an original pump and brackets on ebay and had the hoses made locally.

I have about $300 in the hole system, including the pump, gear box, hoses and mounting bracket.

Depending on what steeling column you are going to use, you will need some type of coupling also.

Hope this helps.

One other thing, I am installing a "heavy duty" tie rod. I have read that the original tie rods can bend using powersteering.

Mid Fifty also sell the hoses, they are universal hoses with various adapter fittings to match them up with any popular PS pump. Most modern engines and a lot of older ones have a PS pump and bracket setup available for them, or custom brackets can be made or modified from alternator/generator or AC compressor mounts. If you use a Saginaw PS pump (80 on GM) the pressure hose fitting is 16 mm same as on the Toyota box so a stock Toyota replacement hose can be used. When you get the box be sure to get the return hose fitting since is is a bast**d 17 mm size. MF includes a custom machined 17 mm adapter fitting in their hose kit tho. The return hose is low pressure so it's a cut and hose clamp deal, just be sure to use PS return hose stock.
Avoid the ultra high pressure PS pumps from the large sedans i.e. Cadillac, Lincoln.

I couldn't find a piman anywhere for 57-60. Here us a link showing how to make one for a 53-56. The concept works fine for the 57-60. http://www.geocities.com/zeener96/toyota.htm

toyota power steering kit

One source: http://www.nolimit.net/Products/PowerSteer.htm

It is a bolt-on kit. I just ordered mine last week. It's available with or without the toyota gearbox. Cheaper to get the gearbox from the junkyard )$40-75) and grind off a couple of bits than buy their rebuilt/modified unit ($150). Can't speak for durability yet. You also have to fabricate or buy hydraulic hoses that are Ford on one end and Toyota on the other - $120 for braided stainless. As for pump mounting, you should be able to get a bracket from passenger cars with Y-block engines. I've got a 302 in my 1959 Panel now so a pump bracket and belt were very easy to get off a mid-80's Lincoln Towne Car. Will let you know how the kit looks and fits when it shows up later this week.

Mine has been in the truck for about 3 years. No problems with the power steering at all. In fact after the armstrong, you are going to be surprised
at the difference. With a 223 you shouldn't have the usual problems with header clearence that some of us go through. Good luck and enjoy
