If it is just the shifter that is sloppy, check the roll pins and the wholes for the roll pins. My 4 on the floor is sloppy because the rool pin wholes in the shifter are stretched, but I havn't worked with column shifters but I asume that they use roll pins like the floor shifters do.
If it does use roll pins, and the wholes are streched then you could either drill it out to a bigger size, or find a junkyard with a good shifter.

I have had that problem from time to time...just snugged up the bolts (there are adjustments viewable from underside). Alignment was in my Chilton's truck book...used a drill bit, forget what size. Library may have a book if you do not...
