I swore I would never own a 80-86 ford truck as long as I live, but had to buy a truck in a hurry when my son got T-boned in his truck, so we picked up a 86 XLT f150 2wd, now that he's got his settlement he bought another new truck and gave me the 86 back to sell, so I've been driving it around lately, I'm really starting to like that truck, guess I'm a hippocrit. Have you ever said never then changed your mind after a second look?
Is the 80-86 the one with square Headlight and the marker under it. Or is it the one with the headlight then the marker to the side? Or is this the 87-91?
I think cause I loved the styling of the 78&79 so much I was just disapointed when they changed it to the more square style, and cause I guess the early 80's got such bad press with the swiss cheese frame, and I really didn 't like the dash, but the whole thing has kinda grown on me. takes me awhile to come around . I hope no one takes my comments personnel its just my opinion
It's a "free" country. Be a hipp......uh, enjoy the truck.
My dad had an 84 Lariat SuperCab. Unfortunately, the previous owner botched A LOT of stuff rebuilding the engine and replacing other pieces which kept my very mechanically apt pops quite busy. 4 of the cylinders drank oil bad to top things off. Oh well, his 97 Frencholet, er Chevrolet, is treating him well.
Actually, I wanted nothing to do with the pre-93 Rangers. Too boxy, initially, but if I was still into finding a 4x4 4 banger (want a loaded ~94 Exploder now), they'd be more common in that era.
I have to agree on a distaste for the early 80's trucks. IMO, that was Ford's ugliest truck body style ever, until 97 rolled around. 78s were beautiful, 79 was ok (square headlights really detracted from the looks), but the 80-86 were ugly. That's probably why I didn't mind beating the crap out of my 84, and I actually kinda enjoyed chopping it into little pieces last week.
The "Swiss Cheese" frame was only on the 80 model, Ford quickly figured out the weight saved wasn't worth the potential problems. I always thought the 80-86 was a pretty good looking truck, its biggest flaw was rust.
The 80/86 was not one of my favorites but the one that I have was very good to me. Got good fuel milage, was a 302 auto o/d. Probably should of kept it but liked the 93 XLT much better but it was alot more money.
