me and myself are having a battle of keeping and rebuilding and adding some stuff to a 351m to make more power. or to go 460 and have the power already there. and the 460 is pretty much a fall in instalation (iknowi have tochange motor mounts) . one thing i would like to know is about the gas milage are they the same or wich one gets the better millage. the 351m i have now gets horrible milage.
please help me and my self
thank you
You wont get better gas milage with a 460, but I would think parts would be cheaper than a 351m. Like I said in another thread....there is no replacement for displacement.
I'm going to go with Blurry on this one. No replacement for displacement. Gas mileage will depend on lots of things; such as the grade of gas, your driving habits, how well your engine is tuned and so on.
What model truck are we dealing with here?
I need would like to to do the same things I have a 351M and would like to go to a 460. I have a 1980 F250 2 wheel drive. Is ther a lot of problems or is this a pretty easy swap. I.E. pumps drive shaft.
going from a 351m to a 460 shouldn't be difficult at all. I went from a windsor to a 460 and had only a few hang ups. I definately vote for the 460. Since I've had mine, i've had a blast. It's got plenty of HP and more torque than I'll ever need. Mines in a Half ton Shortbed, so It's kinda like a V8 in a Volkswagon.
When you figure in the final cost of swapping a 460 in, it sure buys a lot of gasoline...
You can do it pretty easily, but figure on $200 for a good set of mounts, and $400 for exhaust. You'll probably need to put bearings in and hopefully the 460 doesn't have too many miles on it, otherwise its gonna be about $1500 to rebuild it.... Just bear in mind that it won't be cheap.
That might be overshooting it a bit. It's only about $100 for the motor mounts from L&L, The exhaust shouldn't be any more than $200 to adapt from a small block to a big block, It only cost me about a $100 for mine at a local muffler shop. And the rebuild depends on the condition of your 460.. Mine had about 160k on it and it turned out be be within Ford specs for ring and bearing sizes. the good thing about 460s is that the bottom ends hold up really well, so if it's been maintained at all it should be in diecent shape. I had My 460 in and running with new rings, bearings, timeing set, cam & lifters, Valve seals, and Gaskets for rignt around 600-700 bucks. If you go all out and have it bored with new pistons and overhauled heads, that's where it gets expensive, but since mine didn't need it,, I didn't worry about it. And I didn't have any problems.
If you can find it, it may have been this site but maybe not, there was a 10 page story of parts interchange for a 460 parts on a 351m. I never tried anything but there was a lot of stuff, so if you can find it I'd keep the 351 and build it up nice cause I think by the time its all said and done it'd be cheaper since you already have a 351m and its gonna drop right in after you pull and build with NO hangups
