Right now i have a 89 F250 2wd 351, I always have been wanting a 4x4 drive vehicle i have a 85 mustang GT that i'm going to sell or trade off for a F250 or F350 4x4 but i don't know what engine i should go for. I know the 351 is a really reliable motor and was wondering if the 460 is just as reliable. I dont really care much about gas Milage i was just wondering what the best option would be. I also am considering trading the mustang for a Bronco and keeping My truck but i havent decided yet.
The main question is what are you needing the truck for? to just drive around? mud truck? rock crawler? also are you going to lift it and run big tires? (35s or bigger) you can get a f150 with a 5.8 and run 35s safely as a DD. If i was buying a f250 or 350 and had to go with a gas engine i would get the 460 for sure... i have a f150 with the 5.8 its basically a light duty f250 and the 5.8 is a perfect motor for the truck but for a f250 or 350 i think it would be alittle under powered without a few upgrades. Just curious but why dont you look into getting a 250 or 350 with a powerstroke?
how use use the truck makes a huge difference. A friend and I are fixing up a 351 f250 4x4 with 4.10 gears to use as a plow truck. I think this is an awesome combo for the job.
If however I knew this truck was going to be doing much in the way of towing. I wouldn't waste my time puting the 351 back in, I'd opt for the 460 for sure.
...I don't know..I've owned both a 460 truck & a 351 and quite frankly, there's not much power difference. There's a *little* mileage difference but not much. I'd go for the 351...its better engineered and easier to work on. The 460 seems to be too big to get out of its own way, IMHO....

How is a 351 better engineered or easier to work on?
the 460 is a newer design, much, much stronger block and heads, ungodly potential in horsepower and cubic inch, and makes a bunch more torque in stock form, with little consequence on fuel economy.
If you are going to tow once and a while and use as a DD......351
If you are going to tow MOST of the time and little around town empty use........460
(you will appreciate all that effortless torque, making the mpg more bearable)
I'd put this in: if you're looking to leave the truck mostly as is without any major mods, go with the 351. It'll respond better to the little upgrades especially if you get one with a MAF system. The MAF 460s are almost impossible to find outside of California.
I feel like the stock 460 is awesome for towing, but isn't going to feel any more impressive unloaded than a 351.
But, if you're looking to build it up, you don't care about the gas, and your willing to work with the MAP computer's short comings: go for the 460, no doubt about it. I love mine and wouldn't trade down for anything.
