Hey all. Happy New Year.
This was the best way for me to start the new year. I got in my truck a 99 F250 SD with the 7.3 in it with 67000 miles on it, put it in gear and started driving. Well then the OD light which was off (OD on) started flashing. When it did that I was unable to get out of 2nd gear. Today I decided to go to the parts store and use their scanner to see if there was anything going on with it. After about 2 minutes of driving the flashing stopped and it would go into 3rd with no problem. Then it started back up after about 2 hr of driving.
It is about 2000 miles under a fluid change. Pretty close so I was going to change it anyways. But what else is going on. Or what else could it be. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2700 mile drive coming up here in about 2 months and I want to be sure everything is working properly

Common problem is for the speed sensor in the top of the rear end to go bad. $20.00 and easy to change..That may be your problem.
Be sure to read the stuff on the top of the page there is alot of info there. Enjoy!!!
99 thanks for the info. Could there be something going on with the t.c. also. I have been looking at the other post in here and most of them also have the ABS and the Speedo not working properly. I don't seem to have a problem with that. At least I haven't noticed it yet.
Yup it could be something else but the sensor is the easiest place to start. The pulses from it may be good enough for certain things and not good enough for some others. Of course you know how troubleshooting goes.

I don't think the Turbo Charger, Transfer Case, or Torque Converter would be involved with this problem.
When the light flashed a code was stored. Most auto parts stores have generic scan tools that can't read Ford transmission codes. You need a scan tool with the right software. The code is in there, you need to find it to find out what went wrong. Anything else is a SWAG.

we have seen so many of these rear diff sensors cause this, I wish I had the money dealers are charging to fix this I'd be a millionare by now!
When removing the sensor clean the dirt of first so nothing falls in the rear diff.
If you find a ton of metal sludge on it ,its normal but consider changing the fluid pretty soon .
Just ordered my new speed sensor today. Hopefully that fixes the problem. If not then time to go to tranny shop to get it checked. Hopefully no new torque convertor, or tranny is needed.
