exhaust problems
hey, ive got an 82 F150 4x4 with the inline 6, i need an exhaust, all the shops tell me that they have to install a catalytic convertor, and the whole job will be nearly $500, i am not skilled enough or have the right tools to do this job myself, is what these shops telling me true? that its a legal issue to have a catalytic convertor? and what muffler shops do you reccomend? I live in the state of Indiana

If there is an emissions testing program in your state, then you have to have a catalytic converter. If there is no testing, then you can get away without having one. It is a federal law, though, that if the vehicle came with one, it has to have one. All the exhaust parts you need are available from Advance Auto, or from Auto Bone. A tailpipe is around $20, the muffler is $14, the intermediate pipe is $9, and if you have a short wheel base, that is all you should need. Clamps, a 9/16" wrench to fit them, and maybe a hacksaw to remove any rusted parts. So, for less than $100, including the tools, you can have a new exhaust.
