I want to buy a nice old F250 but want to make sure it is old enough that nobody is going to tell me that it should have catalytic to be legal. Can someone tell me when they started using catalytic converters? I don't think the F250 started the same year as the F100-F150.
i dont know if this applys to fords, but my girlfriends dad has a 77 chevy that he bought new. he said he had a choice between his 77 and a 78, but he went with the 77 cuz it didnt have cats, so i'm assuming that 78 was the first year for trucks to have cats. does this apply to fords too? i thought this stuff was all government regulated
Ford started putting cats on their truck in 1979. The 78 and older will not have the unleaded fuel lettering in the fuel gauge. And the gas fillers will have no flap. My 78 F-150 Larait doesn't have these and my son's 79 Bronco does. Hope this helps. My 78 has true dual exhaust and passed TN emissions.
im not for sure if this is a Oklahoma state law or not but, anything thats 1978 or newer is required to have cats on it, its still a law here but since they got rid of our inspections here, it doesnt matter anymore in oklahoma , but that may not apply where your at......
F100 and F150 had them by 1975. F250 did not have them until late 78
or early 79.

Nope. I have a non-California 1976 F-150 and no cats, no "unleaded fuel" only gas guage. Believe it or not the exhaust system was either original or serviced with factory parts untill 2 years ago. The reason for an F-150 half ton and an F-100 Half ton was that the F-150 was just heavier enough to be exempt from having cats in the begining.
'76 F-150s with CA emissions might have had cats, I don't know.
Federal law stated that any vehicle with a GVW of 6000 lbs or less were required to have cats (this was 1974). In 1975 Ford introduced the F-150 with a GVW of 6250 to beat this law. In 1979 Federal law increased the GVW to 9000 lbs. Some trucks have cats, some don't. Any state emmision laws should be based on Federal laws. If your truck came with cats, they need them now, if they didn't come with them, they don't need them now. I just purchased a 1978 F-150 XLT for just this reason (Non-Catalyst on the valve cover). I have a 1977 F-150 Supercab that did not come with cats, but a 1978 (late build) F-250 Supercab Camper Special that did come with cats. I had a 1985 F-250 cab chassis that did not came with cats (GVW of 9200). The law has always gone by GVW.
